Former Roadrunners guard Nicole Dunson enters her fourth season as an assistant coach with the UTSA women’s basketball program. She oversees guard development and assists with the day-to-day responsibilities of the team.
In her second season with the program, Dunson helped guide the 2014-15 Roadrunners to a fourth place finish in Conference USA, a vast improvement from the previous year of a 15th place finish. Under her guidance, Kamra King wrapped up her collegiate career as the only player in school history to lead the team in scoring all four years. King left UTSA sixth in the all-time record books in points with 1,367.
Prior to returning to the Alamo City, Dunson spent two seasons as the head girl’s varsity basketball coach at Richard King High School in Corpus Christi. She led her team to the 2011-12 District 28-5A Championship and a berth in the state playoffs both years. The Corpus Christi native also was selected to coach in the 2013 CBCA All-Star Game.
In her first role as head coach, Dunson spent the previous four seasons at the helm of San Antonio’s Harlandale High School girl’s basketball program. She also served as the head junior varsity track & field coach in addition to being a health and physical education teacher. In 2006, Dunson began her coaching career as the head coach for the girl’s U-14 Shooting Stars Basketball AAU program.
After transferring to UTSA following two seasons at the University of Central Florida, Dunson sat out the 2002-03 campaign per NCAA transfer rules, as well as the following year with a right knee injury. She was an immediate producer in her inaugural season with the Roadrunners, averaging 8.8 points per game and shooting 42 percent from behind the 3-point line.
Following her senior season, Dunson was named the 2005-06 Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year after finishing 18th in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (44.1 percent). She was also a recipient of the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar award in 2006 and was named a CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI honoree. She still holds the UTSA single-season and career mark in 3-point field goal percentage.
She graduated from UTSA with a biology degree in 2005 and went on to receive her master’s in education with an emphasis in sports psychology two years later.
