UTSA Set To Host Sam Houston State In Regular Season Home Finale

SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA women’s basketball team looks to snap its two-game losing streak against Sam Houston State this Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Convocation Center. Tip is set for 4 p.m.

Last Outing
Stephen F. Austin used clutch shooting down the stretch to hand UTSA a 77-68 loss Thursday night in Southland Conference action at the William R. Johnson Coliseum in Nacogdoches. SFA continued its home court dominance over UTSA winning its 14th consecutive game against the Runners. Junior Charity Egenti led the Ladyjacks with 16 points, while senior LaToya Mills added 14 points and eight rebounds. Junior Vivian Ewalefo led four Roadrunners in double digit scoring with 18 points and hauled in a team-high eight rebounds. Senior Nicole Dunson moved into the second place with 97 career 3-pointers made, in just two seasons at UTSA.
Scouting Report On Sam Houston State
SHSU is coming off a 63-57 win against McNeese State on Feb. 18 in Huntsville, Texas. The Bearkats are battling with two other SLC team for the 8th seed. Sam Houston State is 9-15 overall and 4-9 in league play this season. Sophomore Adah Wells leads the team averaging 9.4 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. In their last five outings, the Bearkats are 2-3 and have dropped three straight games.
Last Meeting Between UTSA and SHSU
UTSA and SHSU needed overtime to decide the outcome of the game; however, the Roadrunners came out on top with the 75-71 victory on Jan. 19 at Johnson Coliseum. Senior Katie Sandefur led the way with a career-high 22 points, nine of them coming in overtime.
All-time Series
UTSA leads the all-time series against Sam Houston State, 23-13. The Roadrunners are 12-6 at home and have won nine straight game over the Bearkats.

Downtown Dunson Chasing 3-point Marks
In Thursday's game against SFA, Dunson surpassed former UTSA player Rosie Smith for second all-time with 97 career 3-pointers made. The sharpshooter has connected on 51 3-point baskets this season, which ranks first on the team, and leads the squad in 3-point shooting percentage at 47%, which ranks first in the SLC. Dunson stands sixth in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage. Dunson trails Philicia Ross by 23 treys for the number one spot. She is the all-time leader in 3-point field goal percentage at 43%. Her 51 trifectas are five shy of the single-season record of 56 3-pointers made by Tammy Rogers during the 1990-91 season.
Double Up Vivian
The Las Vegas, Nev., native has scored in double figures 14 times this season and has led UTSA in scoring nine times. She also has posted five double-doubles this season.
Game On For Sandefur
Sandefur is on pace of becoming the all-time leader in career games played. Currently, she is one game back of former UTSA player Kim Reed, who holds the record with 112 games played.
Davis Makes Big Return
After missing two games, Davis returned against McNeese State and scored eight points. She saw limited action against Lamar and was held scoreless. Against Texas-Arlington, Davis played 38 minutes but scored five points on 2-of-5 shooting. The Houston, Texas, native bounced back with a 17-point outing on 6-of-13 shooting in 36 minutes of action. She was also 3-of-6 behind the arc against Texas State.
Flip-Flop Of Halves
UTSA started of the game red hot against Texas State. The Roadrunners were 17-of-33 for 52 percent and led by 27 points at halftime. The second half was a different story, as the Runners converted only eight field goals in 35 field goal attempts and shot 23 percent. On the other hand, Texas State shot 23 percent in the first half, but exploded in the second frame for 48 percent and outscored UTSA 48-21.
Gibbs Shines Against Texas-Arlington
Monica Gibbs showcased her talent on Fox Sports Southwest when UTSA hosted Texas-Arlington on Feb. 16. The Stillwater, Okla., native posted her first career double-double and was two assists shy of a triple-double. Gibbs scored career-highs of 15 points, 14 rebounds and eight assist.
Playing Machine Dunson
In the double overtime win over UTA, Nicole Dunson was the only player from both teams to play all 50 minutes. She is the only player on the team averaging over 30 minutes per game. (33.6).
Home Sweet Home
The Roadrunners are 8-4 in the Convocation Center this season, including 6-1 in conference play.
Double Feature
Ewalefo record her fifth double-double on the season and fourth in the last five games. The Las Vegas, Nev., native posted her first double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds on Dec. 19, 2005.
Runners Ranks In SLC
Dunson leads the league in 3-point field goal percentage (.472) and ranked third in 3-pointers made per game (2.00) and ranks fifth in field goal percentage (.470). Point guard Monica Gibbs stands second averaging 4.57 assists per game, while center Lacy Mingee ranks sixth in field goal percentage (.476). Ewalefo is sixth in the league with 7.1 rebounds per game.
200th Career Victory
Rae Rippetoe-Blair won her 200th career game with a 67-57 win over Nicholls State on Feb. 2.
Another 10+ Season
The win over Northwestern State secured Rae Rippetoe-Blair’s sixth straight season with 10 or more wins.
High Expectations In The SLC
UTSA was picked to finish second in the SLC coaches and SID’s polls, behind Texas-Arlington.
