SAN ANTONIO - UTSA collected its third straight Southland Conference win with an easy 17-point victory at Sam Houston State last Thursday night. The Roadrunners look to extend their winning streak to four in a row this Saturday when they host Stephen F. Austin at the Convocation Center.
Series meeting: Stephen F. Austin leads the all-time series, 29-5, against UTSA. The Ladyjacks are 13-4 at the Convocation Center. The Roadrunners have won three of the four meetings at home against the Ladyjacks, including a 66-48 win on Jan. 21, 2006. In the previous five meetings between these two teams, the Roadrunners have won three out of the last five games.
Last meeting: UTSA hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final 28 seconds and held on for a historic 61-55 victory at Stephen F. Austin on Feb. 3. It was the first victory in the program’s history at William R. Johnson Coliseum. Sophomore Monica Gibbs, who played all 40 minutes, led UTSA with 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Senior Vivian Ewalefo added 12 points and seven boards, while senior Ana Oliveira came off the bench to score six points and grab five rebounds.
About Stephen F. Austin: The Ladyjacks clinched the No. 2 seed for the O’Reilly/Southland Conference Tournament with a 83-46 win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last Wednesday night in Nacogdoches. SFA has won its last 5-of-6 games and are looking for its 20th on the season. The Ladyjacks are 19-9 on the season and 11-4 in league play. Senior Charity Egenti leads the team in scoring (16.9) and rebounding (9.4), while junior Nikki Carr is second the squad with 10.6 points per game.
Last time out: Sophomore Tia Bogan led four UTSA players in double figures with a career-high 25 points and helped lead the Roadrunners to a 65-48 victory at Sam Houston State on Thursday night. UTSA won its third consecutive game and improved to 12-15 overall and 8-7 in the Southland Conference.
Sophomore Monica Gibbs collected her 11th double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 boards, while senior Vivian Ewalefo and junior Terrie Davis chipped in with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Bogan shines in Huntsville: Sophomore Tia Bogan scored a career-high 25 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 14 point of her 25 points came in the second half. The Livingston native made a career-best nine free throws, including six in a row in the final three minutes of the game.
New month same results: Sophomore Monica Gibbs tallied five double-doubles in February. She began March, the same way she ended Feb., posting another double-double. Gibbs recorded her team leading 11th double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 boards at Sam Houston State last Thursday night.
Sharing the ball: In their three wins against McNeese State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Sam Houston State, the Roadrunners dished out 59 assists. Against the Cowgirls, UTSA posted a season-high 25 dimes. Sophomore Monica Gibbs averaged 7.0 assists in the three wins.
Defensive stand: Over the last three wins, the Roadrunners have played stellar defense holding opponents to under 30 percent shooting from the field. UTSA held McNeese State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to a combine 29.4% from the floor and allowed 20.6% from beyond the arc. The Cowgirls were 18-for-62 from the field (29%), while the Islanders managed to connect on 17 field goals (29.8%). At Sam Houston State, UTSA’s defense held SHSU’s offense to 30.4% percent shooting, including 23.3% in the first half.
Taking it easy: In the wins against McNeese State (Feb. 22) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Feb. 24), senior Vivian Ewalefo averaged 24.5 minutes, but countered her shorts nights with back-to-back 20-points performance. Ewalefo posted her sixth double-double of the season with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds in 28 minutes. versus TAMU-CC. She posted a career-high of 28 points in the win against McNeese State.
It’s getting hot in the Convo: UTSA shot a season-best 57.9 percent from the floor in the win against McNeese State on Feb. 22. The Roadrunners connected on 33-of-57 field goals for the entire game. UTSA was 18-of-30 from floor (60%) in the first half. The 57.9% shooting percentage was the second-best percentage in conference play. Gibbs’ 20 outing: Last season, sophomore Monica Gibbs didn’t have a game with 20 or more points, but this season she’s collected four 20-point performance. Gibbs recorded her first 20-point outing against Eastern Washington on Nov. 24. Gibbs posted three games with 20 or more points in the month of February, including a career-high 23 at Southeastern Louisiana on Feb. 8.
Scoring sensation: Senior Vivian Ewalefo is averaging a career-best 16.2 points per game. The Las Vegas native has scored double figures in 25 games. She started the season with six straight double-digit performance. Ewalefo scored a career-high 28 points against McNeese State on Feb. 22. Ewalefo scored 17 of her 28 points in the second half. On the year, she has six 20-point games.
Climbing the charts: Junior Terrie Davis stands in second place on UTSA’s chart with 104 career 3-pointers. The Houston, Texas, achieved this mark hitting two 3-pointers against McNeese State on Feb. 22 to surpass Nicole Dunson (98). Davis is the second UTSA player to connect on 100 or more 3-pointers.
Double-Double tandem: Senior Vivian Ewalefo and sophomore Monica Gibbs have combined for 17 double-doubles this season. Gibbs leads the team with 11 double-doubles on the season, with her latest coming at Sam Houston State with 10 points and 10 rebounds. In February, she has collected five double-doubles. On Jan. 27, she recorded fifth double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Gibbs collected three double-doubles during the month of December. The Stillwater, Okla., native posted her first one against Eastern Washington with 20 points and 14 rebounds. In just two seasons at UTSA, Gibbs has already recorded 14 career double-doubles.
Ewalefo has recorded sixth double-double on the year, giving her 13 for her career. The Las Vegas native posted her first against Eastern Washington with 14 points and 10 rebounds on Nov. 24. Ewalefo collected her second and third double-double in the month of December. Against Texas-Arlington, she added her fourth with 19 points and 10 rebounds on Jan. 23. During the month of February, Ewalefo recorded two double-doubles.
