Texas State Escapes With A 73-71 Overtime Win Over UTSA

SAN ANTONIO – Texas State senior Tamara Thompson’s pair of free throws with two seconds remaining in overtime gave the Bobcats a 73-71 win over the UTSA women’s basketball team Saturday afternoon in Southland Conference action at the Convocation Center.

UTSA drops to 14-10 overall and 9-4 in SLC; meanwhile, Texas State improves to 14-9 and 6-6 in league play.

Sophomore Terrie Davis (right) led four players in double-digits with 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Senior Nicole Dunson and senior center Lacy Mingee added 14 and 13 points, respectively. Freshman Monica chipped in with 10 points and dished out a game-high seven assists.

Thompson posted a career-high 32 points and hauled in a game-high 15 rebounds, while junior Ashley Riley added 15 points on the day.

UTSA grabbed the early lead scoring the first 10 points with 14:56 left in the first half. Mingee scored four of the 10 points. Thompson’s jumper ended Texas State scoring drought of 5:54 minutes. The Roadrunners upped their 15-2 when Dunson connected on a 3-point basket from the right wing with 12:22 remaining in the first.

UTSA increased its lead to 22-6 with 7:49 remaining when Dunson made good on her second 3-pointer of the half. With that 3-point basket Dunson tied former Roadrunner Rosie Smith for second all-time with 94 career made trifecters.

Thompson’s basket with 4:38 left in the first half ended a 4:30 scoring drought for Texas State.

The Roadrunners pushed their to 26-6 when junior forward Vivian Ewalefo scored four straight points with 7:23 to go in the half. With 2:18 remaining, UTSA built its largest lead of the game of 32 points (40-8) on a fast break lay-up made by Davis.

Texas State shot a season-low 23 percent from the floor on 7-of-31 in the first half and scored a season-low 15 points.

The Runners entered the half with a comfortable 42-15 lead.

The Bobcats opened the second with a 15-4 run to pull within 18-points (48-30) at the 13:34 mark. Sophomore Joyce Ekworomadu led the way with seven points and Thompson added four points during the run. Sophomore Jenna Hoffman cut the lead to 51-36 on a pair of free throws made with 11:45 remaining in the game.

At the 6:25 mark, Texas State trimmed the lead to 56-46 with a 9-0 run. Freshman Ashley Leffingwell’s 3-point from the right wing highlighted the run.

Davis’s third trey of the game ended UTSA’s 3-minute scoring drought with 6:13 left in the game.

Thompson connected on a free throw with 4:23 to make a nine-point game (61-52). Junior Ashley Riley baseline jumper and a three point play by Thompson cut the lead to 61-57 with 2:59 remaining.

Gibbs put back lay-up gave UTSA a 63- 57 lead with 1:47 left in the game. Riley’s lay-up closed the Bobcats to 63-60 with 1:32, then Thompson knotted the game 63-all with her second 3-point basket of the game with 41 seconds left in the game, sending the game to overtime.

Gibbs’ (left) layup gave UTSA a 65-63 lead with 3:39 left in overtime, but Thompson tied the game 65-65 with a pair of free throws. Davis gave the Runners back the lead 67-65 with two free throws at the 3:14 mark.

Thompson gave Texas State its first lead of the game 69-67 on a turnaround jumper; however, Dunson answered with a baseline jumper to tied the game 69-69. A layup by Riley gave the Bobcats back the lead, but Mingee’s layup retied the game at 71-all with 25 ticks left in overtime.

Thompson’s free throws with two seconds gave Texas State the 73-71 win, capping off the Bobcats come from behind win.

The Roadrunners travel to Nacogdoches, Texas for an SLC match up against league leading Stephen F. Austin Feb. 23 at the Johnson Coliseum, schedule tip set for 7 p.m.
