About UTSA Athletics

The UTSA Department of Intercollegiate Athletics offers 17 sports at the NCAA Division I level as a member of the American Athletic Conference, which it joined on July 1, 2023.

UTSA Athletics transforms lives as San Antonio’s nationally recognized NCAA Division I program. UTSA Athletics develops champions in the classroom, in competition and in life, while serving as an integral part of the undergraduate student experience, enhancing the visibility of the university and engaging the community. UTSA began athletics competition as an NCAA Division I Independent in 1981 before joining the Trans America Athletic Conference (now Atlantic Sun) in 1986. Women’s sports competed in the Oil Country Athletic Conference from 1983 to 1985. UTSA moved to the Southland Conference in 1992 before being invited to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) for one year (2012-13). Following a 10-year membership in Conference USA, UTSA joined The American in 2023.

One of the newest FBS programs, UTSA started its football program from scratch and, following a practice year in 2010, played its first season as an FCS Independent in 2011 before joining the WAC for the 2012 campaign. UTSA moved into Conference USA in 2013 and became a full-fledged FBS member starting with the 2014 season. The Roadrunners played in their first bowl game in 2016 (New Mexico Bowl) and later made the move to The American in 2023

UTSA Athletics boasts more than 80 conference championships, over 60 NCAA postseason appearances, 70 All-Americans and nearly two dozen Academic All-Americans.

UTSA also has developed a reputation as an NCAA host institution. UTSA has served as host for more than 20 NCAA Championship events since 1997, including five Men’s and three Women’s Final Fours. Future events coming to San Antonio include the 2026 Women’s Volleyball Championships, a 2027 Men’s Basketball Regional and the 2029 Women’s Final Four.
