About the UTSA Roadrunners
The Roadrunners saw a pair of tough games last week, with a close one at the Convo against Florida Atlantic, and rallying to a seven-point deficit on the road before Tulsa pulled away down the stretch. Wednesday vs. ECU is the first of two games at home this week for the final Convocation Center games of the season. The Roadrunners average 69.1 ppg on 39.7 percent shooting, hitting at least 41.5 percent in four of the last six games. UTSA collects 36.2 rpg and is 62nd nationally in blocks (4.3 bpg).

Dorian Hayes reasserted himself at Tulsa after an injury kept him out two games and working back against FAU, knocking down a season-high 19 points in Tulsa while hitting 7-of-11 field goals with three assists. On the season, the freshman guard averages 8.5 ppg and has 48 threes on the year. Remaining constant as UTSA’s scoring leader, Jamir Simpson added his 10th game of 20+ at Tulsa and averages 16.0 ppg along with 2.1 apg. Austin Nunez is second in scoring at 9.8 ppg but has been out with injury for the past four games. Baboucarr Njie tops the team with 5.3 rpg alongside 8.9 ppg and a team-high 45 blocks (52nd NCAA). Meanwhile, forward Daniel Akitoby has hit double-figures in three of his last four and grabbed 23 boards in that stretch (5.8 rpg), while Brent Moss has averaged 11.3 ppg over the past four outings – logging 11 triples in that run.

About the East Carolina Pirates
The Pirates have also struggled in conference wins, but have stepped up for some big wins, downing Florida Atlantic and North Texas on the road, and spreading around the offensive attack when UTSA visited Greenville. The Pirates average 70.4 ppg on 41.4 percent shooting, aimed inside at the efforts of top scorer Jordan Riley and their big post players. East Carolina has allowed opponents to shoot 44.4 percent from the field for 76.6 ppg, recording 36.6 rpg.

The senior guard standout, Riley leads the nation in field goal attempts, sixth in field goals made and is No. 2 scorer in the NCAA with 23.6 ppg, shooting 42.7 percent from the field but just 28.9 percent from three – in addition to being No. 2 on the ECU rebound charts at 5.8 rpg. Riley scored 19 with four assists and six rebounds in the first meeting with ECU. Making a 12-12 double-double in the first meeting, 6-foot-10 Giovanni Emejuru also nearly averages that on the season with 13.4 ppg and an NCAA-19th 9.5 rpg and an American-second 51 blocks.

Series History
The Roadrunners are still looking for the first series win against the Pirates, trailing 7-0 in the series. On Feb. 11, UTSA traveled to Greenville with an 88-72 setback, the Pirates using a big run at the end of the first half to create separation from the Roadrunners as five players reached double-figures. In their short time in the American together, these teams have had some barnburners, as ECU ended UTSA’s 2024-25 season with a 70-65 finish in the opening round of the American Championships. It was the third consecutive close finish between these teams. The first meeting last season in San Antonio in the last trip to the Convo saw the Roadrunners suffer a one-point loss, as UTSA built a seven-point halftime lead but the Pirates battled back throughout the second half and an untimely jump ball gave ECU the opportunity for CJ Walker to hit the game-sealing turnaround jumper with :04 on the clock for the 80-79 final.

Up Next
The Roadrunners return to the Convocation Center on Sunday for the home finale and Senior Night for Stanley Borden, LJ Brown, Mo Njie and Jamir Simpson, hosting Wichita State with a 7 p.m. tipoff.
