Prior to UTSA
Akitoby came to San Antonio following two seasons at Morgan State in Baltimore, Maryland. He led the Bears in games (32) and starts (25) last season, averaging 9.4 points on a team-best 59.3 percent shooting from the floor, with team highs of 7.3 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game – all in just 24 minutes per outing. Akitoby led the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with 10 double-doubles, also topping the league in total rebounds (232) and rebounds per game, boosted by an NCAA-40th 3.09 offensive boards per contest – earning a spot on the 2024-25 MEAC All-Defensive Team. In his first season at Morgan, he saw more limited time with 1.4 points and 1.3 rebounds on just 4.5 minutes per game, still shooting 54.5 percent.

Akitoby began his collegiate career at Santa Monica College, playing 22 games after his second year was cut short while averaging 12.2 points and 7.0 rebounds. Overall at SMC, Akitoby averaged 9.1 points, 5.7 rebounds (2.3 offensive) and 1.2 blocks per game, shooting 48.8 percent from the floor and 80.4 percent at the free throw line. Originally hailing from Fairfax, Virginia, he played high school basketball at Falls Church High School.
