About the UTSA Roadrunners
After squaring off with a challenging slate across the month of December and starting the American Conference schedule on the road, UTSA is looking to snap a losing skid and capture its first victory both in conference play and in the New Year.
Paced by Jamir Simpson’s American Conference fifth-best 17.1 ppg, the Roadrunners average 69.3 ppg as a team, shooting 38.4 percent from the field. Defensively, the Roadrunners rank 100th nationally while holding opponents to 42 percent and 31.7 percent from three (117th NCAA). UTSA grabs 38.5 rpg and is 79th nationally with 12.7 offensive boards per game, also logging 3.9 blocks per outing.
In addition to Simpson’s season-long leadership, San Antonio redshirt junior point guard Austin Nunez has continued his big offensive run since the start of conference, averaging 9.3 ppg, 2.5 apg and 2.2 rpg on the season, while scoring 16.7 in American games on 51.5 percent shooting. Macaleab Rich didn’t play the past two games, but averages 8.1 ppg, ahead of freshman Dorian Hayes at 8.0. Hayes matched his career high of 15 against Charlotte on Wednesday, putting away four from beyond the arc. Freshman Kaidon Rayfield continues to pace the rebounding effort, averaging 6.1 boards, sophomore Baboucarr Njie leads the team with 21 blocks.
About the Tulane Green Wave
The Green Wave are off to an 11-4 start in Coach Ron Hunter’s seventh season, winning four straight (including two American games) since falling to UC San Diego in Las Vegas on Dec. 13. The Green Wave only have two true road games under the belt, but one is a conference win on New Year’s Eve at East Carolina.
Tulane averages 73.5 ppg on 43.4 percent shooting, while allowing 74.3 opposing ppg on 44.8 percent from the field and 35.5 percent from three. Tulane has been on the low end of rebounding (-6.1 margin), registering 31.5 rpg. Under Hunter, the Green Wave are consistently expected to play a constant matchup zone.
As expected, Preseason American Player of the Year Rowan Brumbaugh has paced the Green Wave’s efforts after a first-team all-conference nod last season. Brumbaugh is scoring an American-second 18.6 ppg on 43.1 percent shooting, ranking second with 4.7 rpg and topping Tulane in both assists (50) and steals (30). Returning senior Asher Woods and Georgetown transfer Curtis Williams Jr. both average 12.5 ppg. Williams leads Tulane with 4.9 rpg from the guard spot, grabbing 25 steals. Woods adds 3.1 rpg and 29 assists to the effort.
Series History
The Green Wave and Roadrunners will meet for the seventh time on Saturday after meeting three times since UTSA joined the American. Last year, the first meeting didn’t fare well for the Roadrunners, suffering a 92-63 loss despite a strong second-half effort. Back at the Convocation Center, UTSA held a late lead but Tulane engineered a closing-moments comeback for the 61-60 win, capitalizing on UTSA post-player foul-outs. In 2024’s dramatic January series renewal at the Convocation Center, the game featured nine ties and 19 lead changes, capped by Jordan Ivy-Curry's buzzer-beater in the 89-88 UTSA win. UTSA trails 1-5 in the series and is 1-2 playing in San Antonio since the series opener in 1982.
Up Next
Rivalry week is up for the closing game of the homestand, hosting Rice at the Convo on Wednesday, Jan. 14, for Salute to Armed Forces. UTSA closes the week with a Sunday road matchup at defending American Champion Memphis at FedEx Forum.
