About the UTSA Roadrunners
Handily rolling past an overmatched opponent in the season opener of the second season under head coach Austin Claunch, the Roadrunners downed College of Biblical Studies in a 97-30 romp on Wednesday. In the process, the Roadrunners set three program records, holding the Ambassadors to the fewest opponent points (30), fewest field goals (8) and lowest shooting percentage (14.3 percent) in the 1,308 games of UTSA basketball history. In addition, the CBS scoring total also set the American Conference record, unseating a league standard from 2014. The Roadrunners shot 50.6 percent from the floor, collecting 30 points off 22 CBS turnovers and scoring 37 on the fast break. Making the most of their height advantage, UTSA won the rebound battle with a 59-32 advantage. A total of 11 players scored and five logged double-figures: Macaleab Rich (15), Kaidon Rayfield (13), Jamir Simpson (13), Mathéo Coffi (10) and Dorian Hayes (10). Leading on the glass, Rayfield made it a 13-and-13 double-double for his collegiate debut. Baboucarr Njie topped the team with three blocks and three steals. Austin Nunez dished out four assists to pace the Roadrunners. Rich shot a team-high 7-for-11, also collecting four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Returning just four players from last season, the Roadrunners welcomed 11 newcomers to the roster (eight transfers and three high school), with 10 of those players seeing playing time against the Ambassadors in the opener.
The Roadrunners stayed true to most elements of a Claunch-coached squad in the opener. Last season, UTSA ranked ninth nationally in fast break scoring at 15.1 ppg, ninth nationally in steals (9.5) and 14th (15.2) in turnovers forced. UTSA also let it fly from range last season, topping the American and finishing 25th nationally a year ago 9.9 three-pointers per game.
About the SIUE Cougars
Into the seventh season under Michael Barone, SIUE had a historic 2024-25, reaching the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance, winning the Ohio Valley Conference and finishing with a 22-12 record after falling to No. 1 seed Houston in the NCAA opening round. The Cougars return seven players from last season, losing three starters and their top two scorers. However, among the seven over 1,000 points and 650 rebounds are back, with SIUE retaining 42.2 percent of scoring and 50.7 of boards from a year ago from their 71.6 ppg and 38.1 rpg.
Highlighting the returners for the Cougars, 6-foot-9 junior guard/forward Ring Malith was an All-OVC Tournament selection and led SIUE on the glass with a 7.0 rpg average, adding in 11.1 ppg on 38.8 percent shooting. Their transfer class is highlighted by sophomore guard Harrison Alexander from Mississippi State, senior point guard Jack Campion (5.3 ppg, 3.4 apg) from Southern Indiana and senior guard Darius Robinson (7.4 ppg, 1.6 rpg) from Oral Roberts.
The Cougars opened with a similar opponent on Tuesday, rolling past East West University, 119-50. SIUE shot 58.9 percent from the floor and 36 percent from three, outrebounding EWU 50-23 and forcing 29 turnovers – scoring 31 on the fast break and 44 off turnovers. Six players went in double-figures of the 13 scoring, led by Ring and Robinson with 16 apiece. Ring had six rebounds and returner Jo Valrie topped the team with nine boards and five steals.
