About the UTSA Roadrunners
The Roadrunners are looking to put one back in the win column after Wednesday’s rally against Texas State came up just short after a strong second-half showing in San Marcos. UTSA opened with a record-breaking win but followed with setbacks to SIUE and then Texas State as the Roadrunners take steps forward with 11 new players on the 2025-26 roster for the second year under Austin Claunch.

Taking a leadership role once again with a team season-high 22 points on 6-of-14 shooting, graduate student guard Jamir Simpson tops the UTSA scoring stats with 17.0 ppg on 39 percent shooting from the field, 40 percent shooting from three and 4.7 rpg. Simpson has logged the second-most threes in the conference to date with 10 in three games. Freshman forward Kaidon Rayfield hasn’t disappointed and is hardly playing like a rookie, averaging a double-double of 13.0 ppg and 10.3 rpg, picking up a block per game as well. Adding to the young players stepping up, freshman guard Dorian Hayes averages 8.7 points, while sophomore wing Baboucarr Njie is putting up 8.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and an American Conference third-best (NCAA 63rd) 2.0 blocks per game.

The Roadrunners are second in the American (84th NCAA) with 28.3 triple attempts per game and are running fast with the typically high 18.7 fast break points per game. UTSA is scoring 75.3 points per game with a league-high 44.3 rebounds per outing, also averaging 9.7 steals and 15.0 turnovers forced.

About the Denver Pioneers
Starting off the first season under former MSU Moorhead coach Tim Bergstraser, the Pioneers are off to a 1-2 opening with losses at Seattle and (RV) Washington, followed by a two-point comeback win at Montana State. Denver will host the Roadrunners for the 2025-26 season opener at Hamilton Gymnasium. Last year’s Denver squad went 11-21 and exited the Summit League tournament on a first-round defeat by second-seeded St. Thomas (MN).

Through three games, the Pioneers are averaging 72.7 points, 33.3 rebounds and 3.7 steals per game, shooting a Summit-third-best 46.5 percent from the field, but also giving up 48.6 percent opponent shooting. So far, Denver is shooting 19.3 threes per game. Playing a short rotation of 10 to date, Denver is led by North Dakota State grad transfer forward Jeremiah Burke, who is putting up 19.7 points on 51.2 percent shooting. The Pioneers have a three-headed scoring attack with big numbers also coming from MSU Moorhead senior transfer Logan Kinsey at 17.7 ppg and 2025 All-Central District First Teamer from MSU Moorhead Carson Johnson at 15.3 ppg and a team-high 3.0 apg.

Adjusting to the new season, against Seattle and Washington, Denver fired off a big count from beyond the arc but moved inside against Montana State and boosted their shooting to 58 percent against the Bobcats. Johnson hit the game-winning shot against MSU with just 1.8 seconds to go, completing a 13-point Denver comeback.

Series History
Saturday will mark the fourth all-time meeting between these teams, the first matchup since 2021 and the first time in Denver since 2013’s series opener. Last time out on Nov. 16, 2021, at the Convocation Center, the Roadrunners collected a 78-64 victory, using a huge 18-3 second half run and a 27-point Jordan Ivy-Curry night to claim the victory. UTSA is 1-2 in the series and 0-1 in Denver, suffering a 75-50 defeat in 2013.

Up Next
The Roadrunners will be back in the Convocation Center on Tuesday, Nov. 18, with a Thanks4giving Food Drive and the first game of the Rowdy’s Fast Break Field Trip program, an elementary school education game at the 11 a.m. tipoff against Southwestern Christian.
