Roadrunners win three events on final day of C-USA Indoor

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Luca Chatham, Gary Haasbroek and Danielle Spence all collected gold medals to headline action for UTSA on the final day of the Air Force Reserve Conference USA Indoor Track & Field Championships at the CrossPlex.

Chatham won the mile and Haasbroek, who was named C-USA Male Freshman of the Meet, claimed top honors in the heptathlon to help lead the men to a third-place finish in the team standings. The Roadrunners scored 96 points for their fifth straight and 18th overall top-three finish at a league indoor meet.

Meanwhile, Spence took top honors in the triple jump with a career performance on Sunday, joining pentathlon champion Gabriyella Torres atop the medal stand. The women accumulated 52 points for seventh place in the team race.

Chatham tallied 17.5 points for the men, as the senior also finished third in the 800 meters and anchored the distance medley relay team to a bronze medal on Saturday night. The Dallas native clocked a personal-best time of 4:10.09 to grab gold in the mile, becoming the program's seventh all-time conference champion in the event. He was joined on the podium by Monty Bertschy, who grabbed third with a personal best 4:11.82. Chatham came back less than 90 minutes later and crossed third in the 800m in 1:52.56.

Haasbroek scored 15 points after winning the heptathlon Sunday and finishing sixth in the long jump and seventh in the pole vault on Friday. The freshman from Australia entered the second day of the heptathlon in the lead with 3,133 points. He clocked an 8.53 in the 60-meter hurdles before setting a C-USA Indoor heptathlon pole vault record with a 16-4 ¾ (5.00m) clearance. He cruised to his second combined-event victory in as many tries with a 3:00.17 clocking in the 1,000m and finished with 5,559 points. Haasbroek, who set the UTSA and Australian national record with 5,949 points last month, becomes the program's sixth conference champion in the heptathlon and the first since Tommy Wolfe won the 2009 Southland Conference Indoor title.

Haasbroek led an 18-point effort by the Roadrunners in the heptathlon, as Jake McDaniel took the bronze medal and Justin Wright placed seventh. McDaniel turned in a personal-best 4,999 points, as the junior from Houston sped to an 8.73 clocking in the 60m hurdles, cleared 12-1 ½ (3.70m) in the pole vault and timed 2:53.11 in the 1,000m. Wright, a freshman from Dripping Springs, scored 4,342 points after posting an 8.62 in the 60m hurdles, a 12-1 ½ (3.70m) clearance in the pole vault and a 2:59.61 clocking in the 1,000m.

Patrick Prince made a pair of podium appearances on Sunday despite a short turnaround between the two events. The senior All-American clocked a 7.89 to grab runner-up honors in the 60m hurdles, his third C-USA Indoor top-three finish. The Conroe returned to the straightaway less than half an hour later and stopped the clock in 6.92 for fifth place in the 60m.

Andre Douglas collected a bronze medal in the triple jump. The sophomore from Jamaica skipped to a 50-6 (15.3m) measurement on his second of six attempts to secure his second career trip to the podium at the league's indoor meet.

Spence grabbed gold in the women's triple jump a day after winning silver in the long jump, totaling 18 points for the Roadrunners. A sophomore from Jamaica, she leaped to a career-best 43-10 ½ (13.37m) mark on her second attempt and bettered her own UTSA record in the process.
Caroline Bellows also posted a PR en route to collecting the bronze medal in the pole vault. The senior from George West topped 12-8 (3.86m) for third place and the No. 2 spot on UTSA's all-time performers list in the event.

On the track, Olivia Esemena narrowly missed a spot on the podium with a fourth-place time of 7.50 in the 60m, while Darionne Gibson clocked a 56.26 for sixth in the 400m.

In the field, Maia Campbell placed fifth in the shot put with a 47-8 (14.53m) mark one day after taking sixth in the weight throw.
