Koty Cowgill just completed his third year as an assistant coach at UTSA. He previously served three seasons as the team’s director of operations from 2005-08. Cowgill handles recruiting and works with the guards and post players. He also oversees scouting for the Roadrunners.
Under Cowgill’s tutelage last season, guard Amber Gregg enjoyed the most successful season of her career and set the school’s all-time 3-pointers mark (200). Gregg raised her offensive production by more than four points per game to 13.7 and she was even better in conference play averaging 15.1 ppg en route to being named second-team All-Southland Conference. For the second consecutive season, forward Ashleigh Franklin led the team in rebounding and was named third-team all-league. In addition, she set a Southland Tournament single-game record with 15 free throws in UTSA’s opener against Sam Houston State.
The 2009-10 season was a banner year for the Roadrunners’ backcourt where four of the team’s top five scorers played. Whitney York earned second-team all-conference honors after averaging 15.0 points per contest and 16.2 in Southland action. Freshman Judy Jones also made the second team, while Franklin was a third-team honoree.
In his first season, the Roadrunners repeated as Southland Tournament Champions and returned to the NCAA Tournament. UTSA also claimed a share of the regular season crown with a 14-2 record. Cowgill helped the Roadrunners post their second consecutive 20-win season (school-record 24 victories). He also was instrumental in the team's offensive production, as all five starters averaged in double figures during the 2008-09 season.
Under Cowgill, York bolstered her offensive production from 9.6 points per game in 2007-08 to a career-high 15.0 a year later and she garnered second-team All-Southland honors. Meanwhile, Jones was tabbed second-team all-conference after averaging 10.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per contest during her rookie campaign.
Cowgill played collegiately at Briar Cliff University from 2000-04, where he collected Academic All-America honors. He received his bachelor’s degree in physical education.
Cowgill resides in San Antonio with his wife, Mariah, and two sons, Camden and Kaden. His sister, KC, is UTSA’s director of operations.
