NEW YORK — UTSA’s offensive line was named to the Joe Moore Award Midseason Honor Roll, which recognizes the nation’s top offensive line units.
The Roadrunners are one of 25 teams selected for the midseason honor roll for the award, which is named after Joe Moore, widely regarded as one of the best offensive line coaches in college football history. The semifinalists for the Joe Moore Award will be announced on Nov. 11.
The UTSA o-line has paved the way for a balanced offensive attack that is averaging 401.5 yards per game, 191.0 rushing and 210.5 passing. UTSA has surpassed 500 yards of offense twice this season with 542 in the 59-45 victory over Colorado State and 527 in the season-opening triumph over UTRGV. The Roadrunners have racked up 200-plus rushing yards three times, headlined by a season-high 277 in the 31-24 victory against South Florida.
The Roadrunners also have been one of the best in the nation at protecting the quarterback, as they rank 17th in the FBS and third in the American Conference in fewest sacks allowed per game (1.0). UTSA went sack-free through the first two contests this season.
The unit is one of the most experienced in the country with a combined 266 games played and 108 starts. Leading the way in appearances is Deandre Marshall, who has 47 games with 13 starts under his belt. Luke Lapeze has played in 43 contests and earned 18 starts, while Darrell Jones owns 34 games and a team-high 31 starts with 18 and 17, respectively, at UTSA. Ben Rios has made 23 starts in 32 career contests and Jaylen Garth has started 15 of his 29 career games. Jonah Miller has appeared in 18 games and Jarrett Henry has played in 17, while Davion Hurth and Devron Williams Jr. have seen the field in 15 and 12 contests, respectively. While the group is experienced, redshirt freshman A’marion Breland earned the start at left tackle in each of his first five appearances this season.
The offensive line has helped UTSA get off to its best six-game start at 5-1 since 2021. The Roadrunners are 2-0 in the American Conference for the second time in four seasons as they host Navy (2-3, 1-2) at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Alamodome.
The Joe Moore Award is named after Joe Moore, widely regarded as one of the best offensive line coaches in college football history, most notably for his work at Notre Dame and the University of Pittsburgh. Coach Moore sent 52 players on to the NFL, including Bill Fralic, Mark May, Russ Grimm, Jimbo Covert, Andy Heck and others. The Joe Moore Award trophy, crafted by legendary sports sculptor Jerry McKenna, is the largest trophy in college football, standing at a height of seven feet and weighing in at more than 800 pounds. The perpetual trophy is made available for display by the winning university until the conclusion of the following college football season. Find out more at joemooreaward.com.
