About the UTSA Roadrunners
The Roadrunners split results earlier in the week at the Jacksonville Classic, falling to a gritty Abilene Christian squad after a slow offensive start, but returning to put the puzzle together against Georgia Southern – blowing out the Eagles in the second half with a 17-point advantage to complete the comeback and return home with a victory and a winning record heading into Sunday.

Lima, Ohio graduate student Jamir Simpson continues to light things up for UTSA day-in and day-out, averaging a team-leading 18.9 points per outing that ranks third in the American Conference and 72nd nationally. He’s also averaging 5.0 rpg and shooting 42.7 percent from the floor and 39.2 from three on an American-third 2.9 triples per game. Simpson logged his fourth 20-point game on Tuesday with 22 points in the win over Georgia Southern. Coming on strong lately, junior forward Macaleab Rich logged 11 points with eight rebounds and two blocks against the Eagles. On the season, he’s averaging 9.2 ppg and 3.0 rpg, shooting 63.3 percent from the field. Proving to be a big obstacle for opponents in the paint this season, sophomore wing Baboucarr Njie boasts averages of 9.1 points, 6.6 rebounds and an American-fifth 1.71 blocks per game. Making a big splash against GS and sparking the Roadrunners, graduate forward Daniel Akitoby logged nine points on 4-of-5 shooting along with seven rebounds in 21 minutes.

Second in the conference with 29.9 bench points per game, the Roadrunners average 77.1 points on 43 percent shooting, collecting an American third-best 14.1 fast break points per game. UTSA is second in the conference and 33rd nationally on a 42.9 rpg average and rank 20th nationally with a league-leading 37 percent opponent field goal shooting.

About the South Alabama Jaguars
The Jaguars are off to a hot start at 6-1 and coming off their only loss, an 80-72 setback at UAB on Nov. 21 – leaving the Jags out of action for the past nine days. In Birmingham, the teams traded leads in the first half, but the Blazers were able to maintain their advantage in the second half, after the Jags drew it as close as one point with two minutes to go. The South Alabama defense will roll out a 100 percent zone look for the Roadrunners, holding teams to just 66.4 points per game while forcing opponents to beat them beyond the arc and limiting the opposition to 39.6 shooting overall. The Jaguars score 76.0 ppg with 37.7 rpg, shooting 48.2 percent of their own while protecting the ball with an NCAA-second 8.1 turnovers allowed per game. Much like what their opponents are pushed toward, the Jaguars keep most of the action inside the arc, with only 24 percent of points coming from three.

Pacing the Jaguars, 2024-25 NAIA All-American guard Chaze Harris and British Columbia transfer forward Adam Olsen are tag-teaming the scoring at 15.4 ppg apiece. Harris is shooting 52.4 percent all inside the arc, while also dishing out 2.9 assists per game and grabbing 4.9 rebounds. Olsen is leading the team with just under half the Jags’ three pointers (21), while also collecting 2.9 rpg. Division II transfer guard from Freed-Hardeman, Peyton Law is leading the team at 69.4 percent shooting with 13.6 ppg, 6.1 rpg and 3.0 apg. On the glass, along with Law and Harris, senior Randy Brady tops the squad at 6.9 boards per outing, scoring 6.4 points.

This is the first meeting between these teams and these coaches, but South Alabama head coach Richie Riley and UTSA head coach Austin Claunch have a lot of familiarity, as Riley originally hired Claunch as an assistant coach at Nicholls State, then Claunch went on to replace him when Riley took the South Alabama job.

Up Next
A break to open the month of December and heading into finals. The Roadrunners won’t be back at home until Dec. 22, but travel to eighth-ranked Alabama on Sunday, Dec. 7, in Tuscaloosa.
