UTSA picks up its ninth AAC series win

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA picks up its ninth American Athletic Conference win in its 11-4 victory over Rice on Friday, May 16, at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio, Texas. En route to their victory, the Roadrunners set a new program record for most runs in a single season.

UTSA scored early. Jordan Ballin led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a wild pitch and passed ball. James Taussig then scored UTSA's first run, hitting a sacrifice fly to score Ballin.

After two walks and a hit by pitch, Ty Hodge came up to bat with bases loaded and singled up the middle, scoring two runs. His brother Nathan Hodge then singled to right field, scoring one run. Norris McClure followed N. Hodge’s RBI single with one of his own to go up 5-0 in the first.

The Owls added three runs in the second to make it 5-3 in UTSA’s favor. UTSA answered in the third as N. Hodge hit a two-run homer to left field, his second homer of the season, to give UTSA a 7-3 lead.

In the fifth, Rice added their fourth and final run of the game. UTSA answered as McClure hit his second RBI single of the night. With Diego Diaz on third, N. Hodge picked up his third RBI of the night on a sacrifice fly.

In the eighth, the Roadrunners grabbed their eleventh run of the game on a wild pitch. The UTSA bullpen was lights out once again as a tandem of Braylon Owens and Jake Cothran threw a combined four innings, giving up just two hits and striking out seven batters.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- UTSA scored eleven runs, bringing their run total to 476, which is a new program record for single-season runs. This record has stood since 2008, when that team had a total of 467.
- T. Hodge picked up his 19th multi-hit game of the season and second three-RBI game this year.
- N. Hodge recorded his seventh multi-hit game of the season and third three-RBI game of the season.
- McClure had two hits and two RBIs for his 17th multi-hit game and sixth multi-RBI game of the season.
- McClure is on an 18-game hitting streak.
- Andrew Stucky has now reached base safely in the last 29 games.
