Roadrunners earn second series victory of the season

SAN ANTONIO— UTSA defeats Youngstown State 13-1 in seven innings in the first game of the doubleheader on Mar. 1 at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio, Texas, and 16-13 in the second game. The win in the second game was Head coach Pat Hallmark’s 150th win at the helm of UTSA.

GAME 1
THE BASICS:
Score: UTSA 13, Youngstown St. 1

In the first inning, the Roadrunners jumped out to a 4-0 lead. The inning started with a Caden Miller single; Mason Lytle followed that up with a walk. With two runners on, Norris McClure doubled down the right field line to score both Miller and Lytle.

McClure was able to score on a fielder’s choice when the third baseman threw it away, going to first. Andrew Detlefsen, who reached on a fielder’s choice advanced to second on a wild pitch, then stole third and was able to score as the catcher threw it away attempting to throw out Detlefsen.

The Roadrunners managed to extend their lead in the third to 6-0. With two Roadrunners reaching base on singles and one on a walk, the freshman Jordan Ballin singled down the left field line, allowing both Detlefsen and James Taussig to score.

The Roadrunners put up six runs in the fourth on an RBI single hit by Taussig, a wild pitch that scored McClure. For the third run of the inning, Nathan Hodge was hit by the pitch with bases loaded to score Taussig. With the bases still loaded, Broc Parmer singled to center field, scoring both Detlefsen and T. Hodge. Lytle then walked with the bases loaded to score the sixth run of the inning, putting the Roadrunners up 12-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Roadrunners managed to load the bases once again and a walk from Ty Tilson scored UTSA’s 13th run of the ball game. Youngstown State managed to put one run across on an RBI single.

Starting pitcher Braylon Owens had an incredible game as he threw 4.1 hitless innings, striking out 10 batters, not allowing a single run to cross. Owens earned the win, his second of the season.

GAME 2

To open the second game of the doubleheader, Youngstown State took an early lead by driving in two runs. The Roadrunners answered the two runs with two of their own as Miller opened the first with a single, Lytle then brought him home on a double to right center. Lorenzo Morresi stepped up to the plate with one out remaining and singled up the middle to score Lytle, making the score 2-2.

The Roadrunners took the lead in the bottom of the second as Ballin led off the inning with a walk. N. Hodge doubled to left field to advance Ballin to third. Catcher Andrew Stucky singled to third base, allowing Ballin to score. With N. Hodge on third, Lytle hit a towering flyball to center field allowing N. Hodge to tag up and put UTSA up two.

After a scoreless third inning, the Roadrunners extended their lead to 5-2 as Detlefsen singled to right field to score Lytle who reached on a double to center field.

Youngstown State took an 8-5 lead in the top of the fifth on a lead-off home run, a walk with bases loaded, and two two-RBI doubles.

The Roadrunners cut the Youngstown State to just one run as Miller hit an RBI single scoring Ballin who reached on a walk. With bases loaded, Lytle flied out to center field scoring N. Hodge as he tagged up from third base.

UTSA tied the game 8-8 in the sixth as N. Hodge reached on a throwing error allowing Detlefsen to score.

Youngstown State took a 10-8 lead in the seventh on a two-run homer. This home run ignited the UTSA bats as the first three Roadrunners to come up to the plate managed to reach base safely, loading the bases for Detlefsen to blast a home run to right center, putting the Roadrunners up 12-8.

Ballin followed the home run with a single. With Ballin standing on first, N. Hodge hit his first home run of his career to give the Roadrunners 14 runs. Immediately after the N. Hodge homer, Stucky got one of his own for the first back-to-back home runs of the season. The Roadrunners enter the eighth up 15-10.

UTSA scored one run in the eighth on a groundout hit by Detlefsen that scored McClure who reached on a walk. McClure stole both second and third before being brought home by Detlefsen.

Youngstown State threatened in the top of the ninth scoring three runs to give themselves 13 runs on the night.
