Roadrunners defeat No. 20 Dallas Baptist in game two

DALLAS — UTSA Baseball takes down No. 20 Dallas Baptist to force a rubber match on Saturday, Mar. 15 at Horner Ballpark in San Antonio, Texas for their second win against a ranked opponent.

THE BASICS:

Starting in today’s game for the Roadrunners was Braylon Owens who went right to work as he struck out the first three batters he saw. Owens gave up his first hit in the second, which was a solo home run to give DBU the lead.

After a scoreless third, UTSA was able to score their first run of the ballgame as McClure was walked for the first runner of the inning. A single by Drew Detlefsen advanced McClure to third. McClure reached home after a dropped third strike and an error committed by the catcher. DBU was able to take the lead on a two-run homer in the fourth.

In the top of the fifth, Mason Lytle singled to get the Roadrunners bats started. Lytle then stole second for his fifth of the year. James Taussig came up big for the Roadrunners blasting his second home run of the series to even the score at 3-3. Norris McClure was hit by the pitch after the homer and advanced to third on two passed balls. Ty Hodge then came up to plate as a pinch hitter and hit an infield single scoring McClure to give UTSA a 4-3 lead.

In the sixth inning Lytle doubled down the left-field line to score Caden Miller who reached on a HBP and Nathan Hodge who led the inning off with a walk. With Lytle on second, Taussig hit his second home run of the day to put UTSA up 8-3 going into the bottom of the sixth.

DBU managed to load the bases in the sixth and that is when Owens’ day would close out as Robert Orloski came into relief. A fielder’s choice scored the first run of the inning, with the second run being scored on a wild pitch. With bases loaded in the sixth, DBU’s hitter would hit a triple clearing the bases, making the score 8-8.

In the seventh inning, N. Hodge singled, scoring his brother T. Hodge, who reached on an HBP. With both N. Hodge and Ty Tilson on the base paths, Lytle hit another two-RBI double. With Lytle standing on second, Taussig singled to right field, scoring Lytle to put the Roadrunners up 12-8. DBU answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh.

In the eighth, N. Hodge came up big, this time hitting a two-RBI single to score T. Hodge and Detlefsen. In their final at-bat, Taussig hit his third home run of the game to give the Roadrunners 15 runs on the day.

In the bottom of the ninth, DBU added two more runs, one on a home run and the other on a fielder’s choice.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- UTSA set a new season high with 41 total at bats.
- With three sacrifice bunts laid down, UTSA set a new season high.
- Taussig’s three home runs is a new season high for the Roadrunners
- Lytle racked up three hits and four RBIs for his 12th multi-hit game and ninth multi-RBI game.
- Detlefsen got his ninth multi-hit game of the season with a 3-for-5 day.
- N. Hodge had a 2-for-4 day for his fifth multi-hit game and fourth multi-RBI game of the season.
- N. Hodge extended his seven-game hit streak to eight games.
