SAN ANTONIO – It was a home opener to remember for the Roadrunners, as the UTSA men’s tennis team (5-7) delivered a dominating 7-0 sweep of 60th-ranked Utah State (8-2) on Friday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center, kicking off their homestand with a big win after a grueling 11-match road start that pitted the Roadrunners against four ranked opponents.
The Roadrunners took charge immediately with a new mix to their doubles lineup, as Miguel Alonso and Alan Magadan quickly moved the scoring needle with a 6-1 besting of Mohammad Alkotop and David Martirosian on court three. On the second court, Jackson Ross and Garrett Skelly followed suit and wrapped up a 30-minute doubles match with a 6-3 defeat of Stefan Vedouelli and Bodin Zarkovic – snapping the USU pair’s 8-0 start to the season.
With the doubles point in hand, Alonso quickly downed Vedouelli in straight 6-1 sets on court six, and Tomás Pinho added a third point with a court three topping of Sergi Micó Fenollar, 6-2, 6-4. In the fourth flight, Danijal Muminovic clinched the victory over the Aggies, downing Nuno Pinheiro, 6-1, 7-5. Though the teams played out the match, that hardly deterred the Roadrunners’ momentum, with Torres finishing next by topping Stijn Paardekooper, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8), ahead of Magadan finishing off Zarkovic, 6-3, 6-3, and Ross closing out the day with a three-setter over Alkotop, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (4).
