SAN ANTONIO – UTSA men’s tennis (8-8) went right back to the winning track with great weather on Friday at the UTSA Tennis Center, topping Dartmouth (7-10) in a 6-1 victory that closed out the week’s competition.
A commanding win on the doubles courts got the Roadrunners started, as all courts nearly finished at the same time, but with a 5-2 lead on match point, Tomás Pinho and Tiago Torres didn’t quite make the cut on court one. However, Miguel Alonso and Alan Magadan got the Roadrunners started with a 6-2 victory over Carlos Guerrero Alvarez and Waleed Qadir on court three – moving their record together to 5-0. Jackson Ross and Garrett Skelly sealed the doubles point with a 6-1 win over Alex Knox-Jones and Zihao Yuan on court two.
Both Alonso and Ross were dominant on the bottom two courts, securing matching 6-0, 6-2 victories over Qadir on six and Knox-Jones on five, respectively. Locking the clinching point, Magadan went straight 6-2 sets on court one over Guerrero Alvarez to start a new UTSA streak. Down the line, Torres and Pinho came out on top of their respective three set battles, with Torres downing Henry Ren, 6-2, 6-7 (3), 1-0, while Pinho capped off UTSA’s sixth point over the Big Green’s sharpshooter, Miles Groom, dealing a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 loss to move Groom’s record to 11-3 on the year.
