No. 19 ODU salvages series split with win in finale

SAN ANTONIO – A three-run fourth inning and a strong start from Ryne Moore lifted No. 19 Old Dominion to a 6-2 win over UTSA baseball in the series finale, splitting the four-game series with the Roadrunners, on a steamy Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

UTSA (21-21, 13-14 Conference USA) split the four-game series with Old Dominion, falling in the first and final game of the series, and pulling a doubleheader sweep of the Monarchs on Saturday, outscoring ODU 23-10 in the twinbill.

The Roadrunners were handcuffed by the pitching of ODU in the game, limiting UTSA to six hits and two runs. Leyton Barry belted his third homer of the year in a 2-for-4 game, with UTSA also getting hits from Griffin Paxton, Joshua Lamb, Shea Gutierrez and Nick Thornquist. Lamb extended his hitting streak to 15 games.

UTSA starter Kyle Sonduck worked the first inning, allowing a solo homer to open the game. Lefty Jay Ward opened the second inning, getting an out and issuing a walk, before Daniel Garza (1-1) came on in relief. Garza worked 2.1 innings, allowing four hits and three unearned runs, walking one and striking out two. Grant Miller came on to face a left-handed hitter in the fourth, allowing a single, before John Chomko took over.

Chomko worked two innings, allowing two hits and one walk, striking out two. After a pair reached in the sixth with two outs, Hunter Mason took over. Mason worked 1.1 innings, striking out three and allowing a hit. Luke Malone opened the eighth and Arturo Guajardo tossed the ninth.

Old Dominion (33-13, 19-9 C-USA) starter Moore (6-1) worked six innings, allowing four hits and two runs, walking four and striking out five. Jason Hartline opened the seventh with a two-run lead, working two shutout innings. Noah Dean worked the ninth.

The Roadrunners will return to action on Friday, traveling to face No. 14 Louisiana Tech in a four-game series.

Kyle Battle led off the top of the first inning with his 16th homer of the year, a blast out to leftfield.

After a two-out Walk, issued to Thornquist, Barry smashed a two-run homer out to right-centerfield giving UTSA a 2-1 lead.

ODU immediately regained the lead with two in the fourth, getting a leadoff single from Matt Coutney, who moved to second after Thomas Wheeler reached on a fielder's choice after an error while trying to get the lead runner. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, with a passed ball scoring Coutney and an RBI groundout scoring Wheeler. Battle followed with a single into left, stealing second and scoring on an RBI single from Kenny Levari.

The Monarchs added on in the eighth, getting a one-out double from Ryan Teschko and Battle followed with a walk. Lavari then singled up the middle to plate Teschko and push Battle to third. Carter Trice forced home Battle with an RBI groundout.
