Eighth-inning homer pushes UTA past Roadrunners in nightcap

SAN ANTONIO – Connor Aube's eighth-inning homer broke the tie game and lifted UT Arlington to a 2-1 win over UTSA baseball in the nightcap of a Saturday doubleheader, on Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Field. 
 
UTSA (4-1) couldn't complete the doubleheader sweep of UTA (5-4), as the Roadrunner won the first two games in the series, 13-1 on Friday night and 3-0 in the doubleheader opener on Saturday. 
 
The Roadrunners pitching staff worked 20.1 consecutive shutout innings after allowing a first-inning run on Friday night, lasting until UTA evened the game with a tally in the sixth inning. Aube led off the eighth with the go-ahead homer, the first of the year for the senior centerfielder. 
 
UTSA collected nine hits in the game, led by two-hit games from Dylan Rock, Ian Bailey and Leyton Barry. UTSA also got hits from Griffin Paxton, Joshua Lamb and Kyle Bergeron. Lamb drove home UTSA's run.
 
UTSA starter John Chomko worked 3.2 innings, allowing two hits and three walks, striking out two. After a two-out hit in the fourth, UTSA turned to senior Hunter Mason (1-1), who escaped the jam. Mason worked 4.2 innings, allowing five hits and two runs, walking two and striking out three.  Daniel Garza got two outs in the ninth. 
 
UTA starter David Moffat worked five innings, allowing eight hits and one run, walking two and striking out three. He was replaced to open the sixth inning in a tie game by Tanner King (1-0), who worked three shutout, one-hit innings with one walk and two strikeouts. Michael Wong worked a shutout ninth for his second save. 
 
The series will conclude at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Roadrunner Field. 
 
The Roadrunners struck first for the second consecutive game, scoring one in the second inning. Leyton Barry reached on a one-out single and scored after Joshua Lamb's RBI double into the right-centerfield gap. 
 
UTA evened the game with a run in the top of the sixth inning, getting an RBI single from Dylan Paul, scoring Aube, who drew a walk to open the inning. 
 
Aube gave UTA the lead with a leadoff solo shot in the eighth inning, sending the first pitch he saw over the leftfield fence for a 2-1 lead. 
 
GAME NOTES: Sophomore RHP John Chomko made his first career start … Junior SS Joshua Lamb doubled for the fourth time in 2021 and the 11th time in his career … UTSA turned its sixth double play of the year in the second inning … Hunter Mason appeared in his 43rd career game and his third of the year … Chomko worked a career-long 3.2 innings … Lamb was his by his first pitch of the year and the fourth of his career … CF Dylan Rock doubled for the second time in 2021 and the 35th time in his career … RHP Daniel Garza appeared in his second career game … UT Arlington leads the all-time series 47-32, with UTSA owning a 19-17 advantage in games played in San Antonio.
