Lozano guides UTSA to fifth place at Lone Star Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — Zander Lozano registered his 10th career top-10 finish to lead the UTSA men's golf team to fifth place at the Lone Star Invitational, which concluded on Tuesday at Briggs Ranch Golf Club (par 72/7,247 yards).

Lozano tied for sixth place with a 7-under-par 209 (69-66-74) en route to his second straight and fourth overall top 10 of his junior campaign. The Fair Oaks Ranch native's final round was highlighted by his team-high 14th birdie of the event, a four on No. 13.

The Roadrunners carded an even-par round on Tuesday to close out a 17-under 847 (279-280-288), the program's best 54-hole scorecard in the eight-year history of the tournament and the fourth-best tally in school annals. UTSA was six shots ahead of No. 48 New Mexico (853) and just five back of UTEP (842) and 10 behind third-place Mississippi State (837) in the 15-team field.

Bryce Alley and Sean Meehan finished in a tie for 18th at 3-under 213.

Alley fired a 3-under 69 on Tuesday that featured three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 13th. That followed a 71-73—144 that the senior turned in on Monday.

Meehan, a sophomore from San Antonio, recorded rounds of 67, 70 and 76 en route to his best finish of the spring season.

Collin Clark matched Alley for the team's low round of the day with a 69 and ended up in a tie for 30th at 1-under 215 (75-71-69).

Adam House rounded out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 57th with a 222 (72-73-77), while Dylan Godfrey tied for 72nd with a 229 (82-72-75) while competing as an individual.

No. 15 Oklahoma claimed the team title, breaking the previous tournament 54-hole scoring record of 835 (Texas Tech, 2015) with a 40-under 824 in rallying from a 10-shot deficit to seventh-ranked Illinois, which finished second with a 36-under 828. The Sooners also eclipsed the single-round scoring standard with a 21-under 267 on Tuesday, which bettered the previous mark of 272 originally set by Southeastern Louisiana (2015) and matched by Illinois in Monday's opening round.

OU's Max McGreevy shattered the Lone Star Invitational individual scoring record with a 20-under 196 that included a tournament-best 63 in the second round and was capped by a 64 on Tuesday en route to capturing the individual crown. The previous low was a 206 by Texas A&M's John Hurley in 2009.

The Roadrunners will return to the course on April 1-2 when they travel to Bryan for The Aggie Invitational.
