SAN ANTONIO — Charlotte scored 11 unearned runs in the fifth inning en route to a 22-4 victory at UTSA on Friday night.
After the 49ers (21-28, 10-15 C-USA) scored a combined seven runs in the first two innings, the Roadrunners (15-33, 6-19 C-USA) answered back with a pair of scores in the bottom of the second.
Mason George led off with his 15th double of the season and came around to score on J.T. Gilmore's RBI ground out. Two batters later, C.J. Pickering crossed home plate on Ben Brookover's pinch-hit double.
Charlotte went quietly in the third and tacked on another two runs in the fourth before erupting for 11 the following inning. The 49ers registered eight of their 19 hits in the frame and were aided by a throwing error with two outs that led to all the runs. Charlotte's other two runs the rest of the way came in the sixth and ninth innings.
UTSA added its final two runs in the ninth on back-to-back pinch-hits from Jason Serchay and Johnny Whalen. Serchay singled up the middle and came around to score on Whalen's RBI double.
The series will conclude with a noon doubleheader on Saturday. The Roadrunners will recognize its four-man senior class between games.
