Four-run eighth propels Marshall past Roadrunners on Sunday, 5-2

SAN ANTONIO — Marshall rallied for four runs in the eighth inning to defeat UTSA by a score of 5-2 in Sunday's rubber game at Roadrunner Field.

UTSA (12-19, 3-9 C-USA), which dropped its fourth consecutive Conference USA series, was led by Mason George, Bryan Arias and Jason Serchay, all of whom had a multiple hit games. George added an RBI and a double, while Arias had a pair of two-baggers in addition to scoring a run. Meanwhile, Matt Hilston drew three walks for the fourth time this season. He scored the Roadrunners' other run of the day.

Right-hander Chance Kirby was charged with the loss in his 7.1 innings. Kirby struck out a season-best seven batters and gave up three runs on five hits.

Marshall closer Burris Warner earned the win in his three innings in relief. He allowed one run on three hits and walked two.

Just like the previous day, UTSA was on the board early after scoring one run in the opening frame. George doubled to right center, which scored Hilston for the first score.

Kirby and company kept the Thundering Herd (17-13, 7-5 C-USA) off the board through five innings before Ryne Dean to tied the score with a solo homer.

A 40-minute lightning delay halted play before both teams could return to the field, but Marshall came back and scored four times in the eighth following the delay.

The Roadrunners managed to squeeze a run out in the home half of the eighth on Trent Bowles' sacrifice fly that scored Arias.

UTSA will continue its current home stand on Tuesday, April 12, when it hosts Incarnate Word at 6 p.m.
