SAN ANTONIO — Brett Hogan posted his eighth career top-10 finish to lead the UTSA men's golf team to a fifth-place tie at this week's Lone Star Invitational, which wrapped up on Tuesday at Briggs Ranch Golf Club (par 72/7,247 yards).
Hogan fired a 1-over-par 217 to finish in sole possession of third place in the 100-man field at the second of two annual home tournaments for the Roadrunners. The senior from Calgary, Alberta, opened the 54-hole event with a 74-72—146 on Monday and he closed with a 1-under 71 on Tuesday that was highlighted by four birdies over a five-hole stretch on the front nine. He was one shot behind Rice's Mario Carmona (76-71-69—216) for runner-up honors and six strokes off the pace of individual medalist Tee-k Kelly of Ohio State, who finished at 5-under 211 (68-72-71).
Behind Hogan's performance, the Roadrunners tied with Mississippi State for fifth place in the 17-team field. UTSA carded a 305-294-299—898, which was two shots behind UTEP (896) and one ahead of McNeese State (899).
Zander Lozano was the second-highest finisher, tying for 22nd with a 225 (76-74-75). J.J. Lindsey was 30th with a 227 (78-72-77), while Sean Meehan (79-76-77—232) and Bryce Alley (77-79-76—232) rounded out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 55th.
Competing as individuals, Dylan Godfrey tied for 26th (77-75-74—226) and Trace Morrow was 59th (79-75-79—233).
No. 50 New Mexico won the team title with a 13-over 877 (293-286-298), while Rice claimed runner-up honors with an 883. Ohio State and Little Rock tied for eighth (903) and Southeastern Louisiana was 10th (905).
The Roadrunners will return to action on April 2-3 at the Aggies Invitational in Bryan.
