Lozano leads UTSA to fifth at Sam Hall Intercollegiate

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Zander Lozano registered his third career top-10 finish to help lead the UTSA men’s golf team to a fifth-place showing at the season-opening Sam Hall Intercollegiate, which concluded on Tuesday at Hattiesburg Country Club (6,.902 yards/par 71).

Lozano followed a 3-under 70-69—139 posted on Monday with his second 70 of the event in the final round to tie for eighth place in the 86-man field. The sophomore from Fair Oaks Ranch collected three birdies, two as part of a 2-under 34 on the back, and finished with 12 for the week.

Lozano’s 4-under 209 marked the second-best 54-hole scorecard of his young collegiate career behind the 207 he turned in while tying for first at the Lone Star Invitational in March.

Bryce Alley was three shots back of Lozano in a tie for 13th at 1-under 212. The junior from Longview put up his second even-par 71 of the event on the strength of four birdies on Tuesday after opening with a 70-71.

J.J. Lindsey was one stroke behind Alley in a tie for 15th at even-par 213 behind a team-best 13 birdies. The Adkins native debuted his senior campaign with a 3-under 68 on Monday morning and bounced back from a 76 with a 69 on Tuesday, the fifth sub-70 round of his UTSA career, three of which have come on the Hattiesburg Country Club layout.

Brett Hogan provided the fourth counting score on Tuesday with a 72 that featured four of his five birdies on the back nine, while Dylan Godfrey tied for 68th with a 75-72-80—227.

The Roadrunners registered a 2-under 282 in the final round after opening with a 283 and 288 on Monday, and they tied with Little Rock at 1-over 853 for fifth in the 15-team field.

McNeese State captured the team title with a 23-under 829 behind individual champion Robert MacIntyre’s 14-under 199 (66-68-65). The Cowboys were followed by Louisiana-Lafayette (844), Louisiana Tech (845) and Mississippi State (852). Southeastern Louisiana (860), Sam Houston State (862), Arkansas State (865), Middle Tennessee (867) and Southern Miss (867) rounded out the top 10.

The Roadrunners will return to the course in two weeks when they travel to Erie, Colo., to compete in the Mark Simpson-Colorado Invitational. The two-day tournament is scheduled to tee off on Monday, Sept. 24.
