SAN ANTONIO — UTSA took over first place in the Conference USA standings on Friday night with a 25-15, 25-20, 25-20 sweep of UAB, which was its sixth consecutive victory (11th win in last 12 outings overall).
Reigning Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week McKenzie Adams continued her torrid campaign with her 20th double-double of the season. The Schertz native amassed 23 kills and 12 digs, while Annie Kunes led a defensive effort that held the Blazers to a .129 hitting percentage with a match-high 20 digs. Daniella Villarreal pitched in with a career-high 13 digs and Jessica Waldrip handed out 38 assists for the Roadrunners (19-7, 11-1 C-USA).
UAB (18-12, 5-6 C-USA) was led by Sam Skinner's 10 kills and Bethany Thomas' 14 digs.
UTSA controlled the opening stanza from the start by racing out to a 16-8 lead on the strength of five kills from Adams.
Adams continued her dominating night with eight winners in the second set. Waldrip handed out 14 assists and the Roadrunners got a pair of solo blocks from Kylie Schott to take a commaning advantage into intermission.
Kunes dug up a set-high 12 balls in the decisive frame to aid Adams’ climbing kill count. Adams finished the third with 10 en route to hitting .348 to finish off the Blazers.
UTSA will conclude regular season play with a pair of home matches next weekend beginning with Senior Night on Friday against East Carolina (12-16, 3-8 C-USA). The Roadrunners then will cap off the campaign two days later against Tulsa (21-5, 10-1 C-USA).
