A former standout player at Wichita State, Taryn Torgerson is entering her second season as assistant coach for the UTSA women's golf program.

In her first season with the Roadrunners, UTSA posted six top-five team finishes and advanced two individuals to the NCAA postseason for the first time in program history. Daniela Abonce became the sixth UTSA player to capture a conference title when she fired a 9-under-par 207 (66-72-69) to win the American Athletic Conference title. Abonce and Carreon, who both were named to the all-conference team, earned berths to the NCAA Bryan Regional where they finished 17th (219) and 37th (225), respectively.

The Roadrunners established 15 school records during the 2023-24 campaign, including low round (-15/273), low 36-hole total (557) and low 54-hole total (837). Carreon broke or tied 10 UTSA standards in her final season including low round (-8/64), single-season scoring average (71.19) and career average (73.12).

Torgerson came to San Antonio from Newman University in Wichita, Kansas, where she was the Director of Golf and head coach of both the men’s and women’s programs for the past three seasons after starting her tenure as the head women’s coach in 2019.

Under her leadership, Felisa Sajulga broke the program record by carding a 67 at the 2022 Newman Invitational and then eclipsed that standard after firing an 8-under 64 at the same tournament a year later. She also was honored as an All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association performer during her career.

Torgerson began her coaching career as a student assistant at her alma mater, Wichita State, in 2018-19. She also was a coach for The First Tee of Greater Wichita that same year.

A standout player for the Shockers in 2014-18, Torgerson was a two-time conference champion and six-time medalist who set six school records during her career. She collected all-conference accolades three times and was a four-time Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar. She was inducted into the Shocker Sports Hall of Fame in January 2024.

Torgerson captured the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference individual crown to help WSU win a second straight team title. She also claimed individual medalist honors at the 2018 American Athletic Conference Tournament, which included a league-and school-record round of 64. Torgerson also set WSU standards for career stroke average (75.5), single-season stroke average (73.2), career 54-hole average (226.6) and single-season 54-hole average (219.8).

A native of Buhler, Kansas, Torgerson was inducted into her high school’s athletic hall of fame in 2022.

Torgerson earned her bachelor’s degree in sport management in 2018 and master’s degree in sport management a year later, both from Wichita State.
