Adam Esses enters his fourth year as an assistant coach for the UTSA women’s basketball
program. Esses serves as the recruiting coordinator for the Roadrunners and works directly with the post players.
During his first two seasons at UTSA, Esses has helped mentor the development of the post players, highlighted by forward Marie Benson earning all-conference accolades after averaging 15.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per game as a junior. Benson’s improvement under Esses was evident from the start, helper her develop from 6.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game as a freshman.
In his first season in 2017-18, Esses helped the post players to top-three finishes in the league stats in rebounds offense and offensive rebounds, ranking second in blocked shots. UTSA advanced to the second round of the league tournament for the first time since 2013-14.
Esses comes to the Alamo City from Bethel College in North Newton, Kan., where he spent the last season as the Thresher’s head women’s basketball coach.
During his tenure at Bethel College, Esses helped the Thresher’s finish ahead of preseason predictions, had seven student-athletes named Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) Scholar-Athletes and two selected as National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Scholar-Athletes.
Prior to Bethel, Esses served as the head women’s basketball coach and athletic director at Kaskaskia College (Ill.) for two years. He led Kaskaskia to two NJCAA District P (Division I) Tournament semifinal appearances and coached four all-region student-athletes and one All-American.
Esses also spent four years at Upper Iowa as an assistant women’s basketball coach and recruiting coordinator. During his time with the Peacocks, Esses mentored two Northern Sun Intercollegiate (NSIC) all-conference selections and a NSIC Freshman of the Year. He also helped Upper Iowa garner success in the classroom with a 3.801 team GPA in 2014, which was best in the nation and honored by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
A native of Littleton, Colo., Esses holds a master’s degree in education with emphasis in mathematics/science teaching from the Nebraska-Kearney, where he also served two years as a graduate assistant on the women’s basketball team. Previously, Esses graduated from Bethany, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary math education and had his start with collegiate basketball.
Esses and his wife, Brittany one have son, Liam, and reside in San Antonio.
