Holt names Esses assistant coach

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA Women's Basketball Head Coach Kristen Holt announced on Wednesday that she has named Adam Esses an assistant coach, effective immediately.

Esses comes to the Alamo City from Bethel College in North Newton, Kan., where he spent the last season as the Thresher's head women's basketball coach.

"I am excited that Adam Esses has joined our women's basketball staff," Holt said.  "Adam brings head coaching experience to the position and will be a positive role model and teacher for our student-athletes.  He will greatly assist us in taking our program to the next level."

"I would like to thank Director of Athletics Lynn Hickey and the hiring committee for this tremendous opportunity," Esses said. "I am so excited to work for coach Holt as she has a great passion for her student-athletes and has the experience to build a successful program. It is an honor to work in a supportive athletic department that has a great vision for the future."

During his tenure at Bethel College, Esses helped the Thresher's finish ahead of preseason predictions, had seven student-athletes named Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) Scholar-Athletes and two selected as National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Scholar-Athletes.

Prior to Bethel, Esses served as the head women's basketball coach and athletic director at Kaskaskia College (Ill.) for two years. He led Kaskaskia to two NJCAA District P (Division I) Tournament semifinal appearances and coached four all-region student-athletes and one All-American.

Esses also spent four years at Upper Iowa as an assistant women's basketball coach and recruiting coordinator. During his time with the Peacocks, Esses mentored two Northern Sun Intercollegiate (NSIC) all-conference selections and a NSIC Freshman of the Year. He also helped Upper Iowa garner success in the classroom with a 3.801 team GPA in 2014, which was best in the nation and honored by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.

A native of Littleton, Colo., Esses holds a master's degree in education with emphasis in mathematics/science teaching from the Nebraska-Kearney, where he also served two years as a graduate assistant on the women's basketball team. Previously, Esses graduated from Bethany, where he earned a bachelor's degree in secondary math education and had his start with collegiate basketball.
