A coaching veteran for more than four decades, including nine years as a head coach, Jim Marshall was hired in March 2010 as an assistant coach at UTSA. He tutors the program’s offensive linemen.
In 2013, Marshall helped lead UTSA to a 7-5 overall record, including victories over a pair of bowl teams. The Roadrunners finished second in the West Division with a 6-2 mark in their first season in Conference USA. He helped mentor an offense that averaged 417.8 yards (175.4 rush/242.4 pass) and 25.6 points per game. The offensive line helped the ground game pile up a school-record 2,105 yards and 23 touchdowns, all while not committing a single holding penalty. Offensive guard Scott Inskeep collected second-team All-Conference USA honors, while tackle Cody Harris was named honorable mention all-conference.
Marshall helped lead UTSA to an 8-4 overall record and a 3-3 mark in its first and only season in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in 2012. The campaign was highlighted by historic wins against South Alabama, the program’s first road and Football Bowl Subdivision victory, and New Mexico State, its first league win. The offense averaged 31.2 points and 390.2 yards (159.2 rush/231.0 pass) per game and scored 44 touchdowns. The offensive line paved the way for 1,911 yards and 21 touchdowns on the ground and allowed just seven sacks in 368 passing attempts. Inskeep earned second-team All-WAC accolades.
He helped the Roadrunners to a 4-6 record in 2011. The offense averaged 26.6 points and 364.5 yards (144.8 rush/219.7 pass) per game and scored 31 touchdowns during their inaugural campaign. The offensive line helped pave the way for 1,448 yards and 16 scores on the ground and allowed just 16 sacks.
Marshall came to UTSA from Incarnate Word, where he served as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for the Cardinals from 2007-09. He helped UIW to a 5-5 record in its inaugural 2009 season. Marshall was the first assistant coach hired at UIW in 2007 and was instrumental in the development of the program.
Prior to joining the UIW staff, Marshall was an assistant coach at Alabama State in 2005.
Marshall was the head coach at Richmond from 1989-94. In 1992, he guided the Spiders to a 7-4 record, which was a five-win improvement from the previous year. He was named the Yankee Conference Coach of the Year and also received the Richmond Touchdown Club Coach of the Year award following that season. Marshall also was the head coach at Tennessee-Martin (UTM) from 1998-99.
Marshall was an assistant coach at Arkansas State in 2001 and Wyoming in 2000.
He spent two seasons at Memphis as an assistant coach, helping the Tigers pull off an 21-17 upset at No. 6 Tennessee in his second season in 1996.
After spending his first few seasons as a prep coach, Marshall moved into the college ranks as an assistant coach at North Alabama in 1977 before heading to his alma mater, Tennessee-Martin, as offensive coordinator in 1978.
Marshall was offensive coordinator at Richmond from 1979-85, UTEP in 1986 and Louisiana Tech in 1987. He spent one season as an assistant coach at Tulane before he was named head coach at Richmond in 1989.
A native of Crestline, Ohio, Marshall played football (center) and baseball (catcher) at Bowling Green from 1966-68 and UTM in 1969, where he was a Small College All-America catcher. He earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Tennessee-Martin in 1971.
Jim and his wife, Kay, have two sons, Eddie and Greg, and one daughter, Nicole.
