Marshall named assistant football coach

Jim Marshall

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA head football coach Larry Coker announced Wednesday that he has hired Jim Marshall, a 30-year coaching veteran, as assistant coach. He will tutor the Roadrunners’ offensive line and his hiring is effective immediately.

Jim Marshall is an outstanding hire for our program,” Coker said. “He is an experienced offensive line coach and he has an extensive recruiting background in the state of Texas, particularly the San Antonio and South Texas areas. He’s very well-respected within the coaching profession and we’re extremely pleased we are able to have him join our staff.”

Marshall is the sixth assistant coach hired by Coker, as he joins Travis Bush, Tony Jeffery, Mike Menefee, Erick Roark and David Ross.

“I’m excited about joining the staff at UTSA,” Marshall said. “It’s a win-win situation and an opportunity that’s second to none. We have a great university, a great city and a great facility in the Alamodome to sell and to be working for a coach at the top like Larry Coker, well it just doesn’t get any better than that.”

Marshall comes to UTSA from Incarnate Word where he served as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for the Cardinals under head coach Mike Santiago. He helped UIW to a 5-5 record in its inaugural 2009 season. He was the first assistant coach hired at UIW in the summer of 2007 and was instrumental in the development of the Division II program.

Prior to joining the UIW staff, Marshall was an assistant coach at Alabama State, and he also has served on staffs at Arkansas State, Memphis, Tulane, UTEP and Wyoming.

Marshall was the head coach at Richmond from 1989-94. In 1992, he guided the Spiders to a 7-4 record, which was a five-win improvement from the previous year. He was named the Yankee Conference Coach of the Year and he also received the Richmond Touchdown Club Coach of the Year award following that season. Marshall also was the head coach at Tennessee-Martin (UTM) from 1997-99.

A native of Crestline, Ohio, Marshall played football (center) and baseball (catcher) at Bowling Green and UTM, where he was a Small College All-American catcher. He earned his bachelor’s degree from UTM.

Jim and his wife, Kay, have two sons, Eddie and Greg, and one daughter, Nicole.
