Vargas named American Men’s Tennis Player of the Month, ahead of ITA Conference Masters Championships

IRVING, Texas – Junior Enzo Vargas was named the October American Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Month on Wednesday, as he’s slated to represent the UTSA men’s tennis team at the ITA Conference Masters Championships, spanning Thursday through Sunday at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Georgia.

Semifinalists at the ITA Conference Masters Championships will advance to the NCAA Singles Championship, which is set to begin Tuesday, Nov. 17 at the Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia.

Vargas receives the monthly honor after winning the men’s singles title at the American Individual Championships in Houston, Texas, at the George R. Brown Convention Center with a 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 4 seed Victor Tosetto of Tulsa in the title bout to lift the trophy and punch his ticket to the ITA Conference Masters Championships.

He started off the tournament with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over Hirro Sakamoto of Charlotte, ahead of a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 come-from-behind victory over No. 6 seed Rafael Botran of Rice in the round of 16. Vargas then downed Alex Santino Nunez Vera of Tulsa, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), to reach the semifinals, and a 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 2 seed Daniel Philips of Tulane sent him to the title match.

Vargas becomes the first UTSA men’s tennis player to win a conference player of the month award since Sebastian Rodriguez did so in Conference USA in September 2022. He also becomes the first to earn a conference superlative since Tiago Torres was named American Men’s Player of the Week in 2025.
