PHILADELPHIA – On Sunday afternoon, UTSA Volleyball visited Temple in its farthest road trip of the regular season. The Roadrunners suffered a four-set defeat (17-25, 12-25, 25-20, 21-25), moving to 12-9 overall with a 3-7 mark in American Conference play. The Owls (13-9, 5-5 AMER) improved to 7-2 at home with the win.
FIRST SET
Three different Roadrunners landed kills, but they fell behind by three in the early stages as Temple’s offense found its rhythm. A trio of missed serves kept UTSA in the fight, but the hosts’ 11th termination put them up 15-10 at the match’s first stoppage. From there, the deficit was never cut any closer than four as the Owls combined for a .630 hitting percentage. Despite 12 efficient kills split evenly between four ‘Runners, they suffered an opening-set defeat by a 25-17 margin.
SECOND SET
After the Owls sent the first ball of the set long, they responded with two aces and as many blocks amid a 10-0 run. Four of the Roadrunners’ ensuing five points came courtesy of miscues, but they faced a 15-7 hole at the technical break. Ally Tribe notched two more kills to take her team’s lead, but the junior’s efforts fell short as Temple cruised to a 25-12 victory in the frame.
THIRD SET
Another 6-0 burst from Temple saw an ace hit the floor, but two kills and a block from Caroline Tredwell got her side to 10 first. Isabella Arroyave then found the hardwood three times in short order, keeping her side up one at the media timeout. Coming out of the break, Tribe notched her side’s first ace of the afternoon before landing her eighth and ninth terminations. Tredwell tallied two more kills and another block down the stretch as UTSA cut the deficit in half with a 25-20 set win.
FOURTH SET
The fourth frame saw more ties and lead changes than the first three frames combined as neither side created much separation early on. Errors both at the net and from the service line kept UTSA up ahead at the stanza’s first stoppage (15-14). However, serving woes struck the ‘Runners as five misses in six attempts from the line pushed Temple back ahead 21-18. Megan Hawkins came through with a timeout-forcing ace, but the hosts closed the affair on a 25-21 kill.
