About the Roadrunners
It’s a crucial stretch for the Roadrunners, with every game holding postseason implications in conference play. After going unbeaten in three straight, UTSA is looking to bounce back from a road setback at Memphis with the Senior Day matchup against the Owls. The Roadrunners will put the pressure on Temple and average 12.9 shots per game for 1.5 goals per outing and a team .461 on-goal percentage. The team’s top shooting position still leans to sophomore Brooklyn Bailey with 39 total and 2.5 spg, but the Roadrunners have diversified the attack lately against conference foes, with redshirt sophomore Leah Varela at 22, redshirt junior Sabrina Taber at 18, redshirt sophomore Ava Jackson at 17 and redshirt sophomore Bri Carrigan at 16. Jackson, Bailey and sophomore defender Sofia Peters each share the team lead at three goals, while defending American Midfielder of the Week Varela ranks 11th nationally with 0.60 assists per game on a season-record nine assists on the year. In goal, one of the trio of seniors looks to close out strong in the final two home dates, as Jasmine Kessler has 67 consecutive starts in goal and paces the Roadrunners with a 1.34 goals-against-average, 54 saves and a .730 save percentage this season. The Roadrunners currently rank fifth in the American in GAA.
UTSA aims to build on its steady homefield advantage, as the Roadrunners have a 65.7 percent (30-13-11) win rate at home in Park West since the 2020-21 season.
About the Temple Owls
The turnaround story of the year in the American, Temple is in itsa third season under Chris Shaw and are 10-4-2 (3-2-2 AMER) after only winning one league game and four total victories a year ago. The Owls have won three of their last four and are 5-2-1 on the road this season. Leading the American in shutout percentage (.563) and second in winning percentage (.688), Temple is second in conference defense with a 1.06 GAA, as New York City freshman Ana Zivkovic has 53 saves on a .757 save percentage. Driven by first-year players across the board, the Owls have picked up the pace offensively as well, scoring 1.6 goals on 13.8 shots per game and a .441 team SOG percentage. Canadian freshman, Victoria Pimenta has made a huge impact with a team-high six goals, on top of five assists, taking a 17-of-35 shots on target. Meanwhile, fellow freshman Katelyn Revelle has five goals with a team-high .733 accuracy, scoring five times out of her 11 on-target shots.
Series history
With Temple’s struggles in previous years since joining the American, UTSA holds a 3-0 advantage in the series and won the only previous meeting in San Antonio. Overall, UTSA has a series scoring advantage of 8-1 over the Owls. Last year in Philadelphia, the Owls went up early on a Valentina Bitterwolf penalty kick in the eighth minute, but it was all Roadrunners from there, as UTSA evened the score by the 11th and Jackson put in the gamewinner in the 22nd, with Jackson assisting on Zoë May’s 59th-minute goal to close the door on the 3-1 win.
UP NEXT: Two more games remain in the regular season, hitting unusual days as the season winds down. On Friday next week, UTSA will travel to North Texas, closing out the slate on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at home with Florida Atlantic coming to Park West. For the top six teams in the league, the American Championships will run from Nov. 8-14 at the Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.
