Kpea's record-breaking night not enough at Wichita State

WICHITA, Kan. – On Friday night, UTSA Volleyball visited Wichita State for an American Conference matchup. The Roadrunners fell in five sets (22-25, 25-14, 25-23, 25-22, 11-15), dropping to 12-7 overall with a 3-5 conference mark. In the process, Ledisi Kpea became the first member in the UTSA’s 44-year history to tally 14 total blocks in a single match. Snapping a five-match losing skid, the Shockers climbed to 5-14 overall and 2-5 in league play.

FIRST SET

The Shockers opened up a 5-0 lead before allowing a point, but Isabella Arroyave and Caroline Tredwell capped off a response with a block and an ace, respectively. Ledisi Kpea then tallied a pair of block assists while the two sides traded service errors. Shortly after, the redshirt junior grabbed her side’s first lead on a solo rejection to pull ahead 15-14 at the media timeout. The hosts reclaimed a three-point edge, but a trio of Ally Tribe kills kept her side in the fight. An ace brought about set point before WSU claimed the opening frame by a 25-22 margin.

SECOND SET

Bryant and Arroyave took turns finding the floor as UTSA flipped the script with its own 4-0 start in frame two. Kpea remained dominant at the net with another duo of rejections before hammering home a kill and watching Giada Obregon’s first ace of the night. After taking a four-point advantage into the technical timeout, Brooke Elliott snuck in a termination between three WSU miscues to swarm ahead by nine. WSU struggled offensively, hitting -.235 while the ‘Runners racked up five more denials. An exceptional night for Kpea continued with another kill and a block before Elliott capped the set, smashing a ball from Valeria Ortiz at 25-14.

THIRD SET

An early ace helped the home side open up an 8-3 gap that UTSA was unable to cut below four before a 15-8 deficit at the media stoppage. Elliott recorded a block and a kill while Obregon notched another ace, but WSU still produced set point at 24-18. MaKinsey Jones and Arroyave combined for three straight kills, setting up a Caroline Tredwell ace. The comeback attempt fell just short, however, as the hosts jumped ahead with a 25-23 win.

FOURTH SET

Kpea notched yet another solo block before Obregon sent in her third ace of the evening. Tribe added five more kills to her ledger in short order while miscues from the Shockers put them behind 17-13 into a home timeout. Two Arroyave terminations broke up a six-point WSU burst that ended in a 21-21 stalemate. Down the stretch, Ortiz dialed up Kpea on two straight rallies, with the Dallas native crushing both balls to force a decisive fifth set at 25-22.

FIFTH SET

Ortiz called her own number with a dump before finding Tredwell and Tribe on multiple occasions to draw even at five points apiece. A UTSA missed serve and two aces on the other end opened up what proved to be the final gap at 11-7. Despite a pair of blocks from the visitors, including the record-breaking touch from Kpea, WSU’s seventh and final ace ended the affair at 15-11.
