About the Roadrunners
Registering key conference wins last week in a 3-0 drubbing at South Florida and a big offensive swing to down then-league-leading UAB, the Roadrunners moved up the latest American Conference standings and are looking to keep the front foot forward with Tulsa coming to town. Sophomore defender Sofia Peters made waves as the American Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week, logging the league’s fourth-best all-sport play of the week on a near-60-yard bomb to score the go-ahead goal against the Blazers – and she shares the team goal-scoring lead of three with redshirt sophomore Ava Jackson and sophomore Brooklyn Bailey. Recently sliding into the single-season assists record with nine, redshirt sophomore Leah Varela tops the team in assists, ranking second in the American and fourth in the nation at 0.69 apg. Pacing the Roadrunner shooters, Bailey’s team-high 37 shots ranks seventh in the conference at 2.85 spg.

The Roadrunners rank third in the American in win percentage at .615, working on 1.65 goals per game and a league sixth-best 13.5 shots, shooting .451 as a team. Limiting the opposition, UTSA’s goals-against-average is at 1.15 behind the efforts of senior Jasmine Kessler, who has an American third-best 49 saves and has a league-third .766 save percentage – earning American Honorable Mention for her efforts against USF and UAB.

After adding another to the totals on Sunday, UTSA’s homefield advantage still looms big, as the Roadrunners have a 66.0 percent (30-13-10) win rate at home in Park West since the 2020-21 season.

About the Tulsa Golden Hurricane
A proven challenger, Tulsa is fighting through a three-game losing skid since opening conference play on a 3-0 win over Rice, most recently falling 3-0 at home to Florida Atlantic. Catching an offensive boost from a 13-0 romp over struggling Arkansas-Pine Bluff, the Golden Hurricane list as the league’s top offense on 2.21 gpg, logging 12.43 shots per game. In games outside of UAPB, Tulsa averaged 1.4 goals, 10.8 shots and had a team on-goal percentage at a league-high .543. Defensively, the Golden Hurricane have been up and down this season, logging a 1.57 GAA with a .694 save percentage on 50 saves – splitting minutes between juniors Maddy Nigey and Abi Dolding. Holding down the offense, sophomore Top Drawer Soccer Breakout candidate Presley Boyd has six goals and five assists – notching a hat trick of both against UAPB, while 2024 American All-Freshman honoree Aniya Facen is a big presence, collecting five goals and matching the team high at five assists. The pair pace the team in shots, alongside 2025 United Soccer Coaches All-Region third-teamer Blaine Schutte, who notched four of her five goals against UAPB.

Series history
A limited series seeing only its sixth edition, Tulsa leads 3-1-1 with the Roadrunners’ lone win coming on a 3-0 neutral-site victory in Stillwater at the 2021 BancFirst Cowgirl Soccer Invitational. Tulsa has claimed the last two, posting a scoreless draw in the first meeting as American foes in 2023. Last time in San Antonio, UTSA jumped to an opening minutes lead and had an offensive edge on nine corners and 27 shots, but goalkeeper Tatum Sanders locked in a stellar performance moving forward with 10 saves, creating space for the Golden Hurricane to drum up a 2-1 comeback win. Last year, UTSA suffered a 2-0 loss in Tulsa.

Outside of these programs head-to-head matchups, there’s also history in UTSA head coach Derek Pittman’s four-year starting goalkeeper career for the Golden Hurricane, earning All-Missouri Valley Conference honors. Pittman started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Tulsa after finishing his professional playing days.

UP NEXT: A massive rematch from last year’s American Conference Championships is set on the calendar, as the Roadrunners travel to Memphis next Thursday with the Tigers currently holding the league’s top spot. Memphis has won four of their five American games and travel to upstart Temple on Thursday night.
