SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA Roadrunners soccer team won its second-straight American Conference match by beating the UAB Blazers 2-1 on Sunday at Park West Athletics Complex.
The Roadrunners (6-3-4, 2-2-1 American) jumped on top in the 28th minute when sophomore Sofia Peters settled a throw-in from redshirt sophomore Sadie Paul and launched it from near the right sideline just in front of the halfway line into the next. It was Peters’ third goal of the season and the first of her career in conference play while Paul notched her first-career assist.
In the 42nd minute, Isabel Peters sent a long ball from a few feet behind the halfway line that a streaking Caroline Pelkofski caught up to in the box. Macie Murphy (6-3-1) came out to the top of the goal area, allowing Pelkofski to kick it over her head and on one bounce into the goal to put the Roadrunners up 2-0.
It was Pelkofski’s first-career goal coming on Peters’ first-career assist. Redshirt sophomore Bri Carrigan also notched an assist, her first of the season.
“Another gutsy and disciplined performance by our group today versus a league-leading UAB side,” UTSA head coach Derek Pittman said. “It was great to get big goals from Sofia and Caroline as well as gritty efforts from our whole team. It’s encouraging to see our players find a way to grind out results when we needed to this weekend and carry this into this week vs Tulsa.”
The Blazers (7-6-1, 4-2-0 American) scored their lone goal of a penalty kick by Lauren Lucero in the 52nd minute.
Senior Jasmine Kessler (5-3-4) finished with a season-high tying six saves.
Murphy made two saves.
The Blazers outshot the Roadrunners 14-8, including 7-4 on goal.
UTSA hosts Tulsa Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Park West Athletics Complex for Hispanic Heritage Day and International Day, presented by Dos Equis. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at GoUTSA.com/Tickets.
