About the Roadrunners
The Roadrunners have a big conference road win on the board after going to Tampa and downing South Florida in a 3-0 offensive outburst on Thursday. The Roadrunners didn’t waste much time gaining momentum, as senior Addi O’Kelley netted the first score in just the second minute – notching her second goal in the last three matches. UTSA collected the insurance goal in the 64th minute when redshirt sophomore Leah Varela’s corner found classmate Sadie Paul to go up 2-0 – giving Varela the outright season assists record with nine on the year. Redshirt junior Sabrina Taber added a third in short order, her first at UTSA, putting the Roarunners ahead 3-0 in the 70th. UTSA averages 1.67 goals on 13.9 shots per game, shooting .449 as a team. Leading the offense, sophomore Brooklyn Bailey and redshirt sophomore Ava Jackson each have three goals, while five other Roadrunners have a pair, among 11 with a goal this year. Bailey tops the team with 35 shots. Varela’s record-setting assists total and average are tops in the conference and rank third nationally. Led by senior Jasmine Kessler, the Roadrunners’ defense has a 1.18 goals-against-average with 44 saves and a .759 save percentage.
Looking to extend their homefield advantage, UTSA has a 65.4 percent (29-13-10) win rate at home in Park West since the 2020-21 season.
About the UAB Blazers
Typically a formidable opponent year in and year out, the Blazers have kicked up the offensive intensity with a coaching change that put Mark Hiller in the interim role. The Blazers are a league-leading 4-1 in conference play with seven wins on the board. UAB is averaging 1.54 goals on just 11.9 shots, shooting .481 as a team. Some familiar names lead that effort, as all-conference senior forward Lailah Stewart has six goals and her all-conference classmate Avery Berryman has five – in addition to a team-high four assists. Defensively, the Blazers have split minutes in goal, with sophomore keeper Macie Murphy taking the bulk of appearances and logging a conference-best 0.67 GAA with 27 saves and an .818 save percentage. As a team, UAB has a 1.15 GAA and .727 save percentage.
Series history
Another first meeting since last year’s conference tournament and the Roadrunners’ path to the title, as UTSA downed UAB 2-1 in the opening game last November in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. UTSA jumped out to the halftime lead on Michelle Polo’s goal in the 31st but Aaliyaiah Durden doubled it up in the 57th. The Blazers cut the deficit with a 79th-minute Stewart goal but it was too little, too late. It’s been a close one over the years, as the series is at 3-4-4 heading into Sunday, and the Roadrunners are looking for their first series win at home (0-2-1). Last time in San Antonio, the 2024 UAB squad overcame a deficit in the second half, tying the game in the 58th minute and garnering the win in the 86th minute of the 2-1 UTSA setback.
UP NEXT: Another home game is on the schedule for the Roadrunners next week, hosting Tulsa on Thursday, Oct. 15, welcoming the Golden Hurricane for Hispanic Heritage and International night for the only game of the week.
