IRVING, Texas — UTSA punter Caile Hogan has been chosen as a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy®, college football’s premier scholar-athlete award, as announced on Wednesday by the National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame.
Celebrating its 37th year, the Campbell Trophy® recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership.
A native of Melbourne, Australia, Hogan is one of a record 206 semifinalists for the award. This marks the 10th consecutive year that a Roadrunner has made the semifinalist list. Luke Lapeze made the list last year, while Oscar Cardenas (2024), Lucas Dean (2023), Ahofitu Maka (2022), Hunter Duplessis (2020, ’21), Andrew Martel (2019), Yannis Routsas (2018), Brady Jones (2017) also all were semifinalists. Maka was a finalist in 2022, while Nate Leonard and Eric Soza also made that final cut in 2014 and 2013, respectively.
"Every year, I'm amazed by what these young men are able to accomplish," said NFF Chairman Archie Manning, whose sons Peyton (Campbell Trophy® winner) and Eli were named NFF National Scholar-Athletes in 1997 and 2003, respectively. "Playing college football takes an enormous commitment, and to perform at a high level on the field while also excelling in the classroom and serving as a leader on campus is something special. These 206 semifinalists have a lot to be proud of, and it's a privilege to recognize their accomplishments."
Hogan carries a 3.54 GPA as multidisciplinary studies major who is scheduled to earn his bachelor’s degree this December. He has been named to the 2025 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team, the American Conference All-Academic Team in each of the past two years, the UTSA Dean’s List in Spring 2025 and the UTSA Honor Roll in Spring 2026.
On the field, Hogan is in his third year as UTSA’s punter, and he has already established himself as one of the best in program history. This season, he is averaging 41.1 yards on 16 punts through the first three games. He owns a long punt of 58 yards and he has pinned opponents inside their 20-yard line four times. A second-team All-American Conference and Dave Campbell’s Texas Football All-Texas College performer in 2025, he posted the second-best single-season punting average in program history with a 45.7 mark. He punted 54 times with 17 sailing 50-plus yards and 17 inside the 20, and he recorded a long punt of 60 yards twice. For his career, he is averaging 42.6 yards and has seen 37 of his 125 punts end up inside the 20.
Hogan also is heavily involved in community service projects. He has volunteered his time with San Antonio’s MLK March in San Antonio, Power of Collegiate Athletes, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Stomp Out Cancer campaign, San Antonio Mega Food Distribution event, Mead Elementary Cyber Bullying and Online Safety workshop, San Antonio Democracy Prep School End of the Year Block Party and the St. Luke's Youth Track & Field Meet. He was a speaker at the Get in the Game/Save a Life Campaign, has visited local children’s hospitals and has assisted with toy drives.
The 206 semifinalists, each nominated as their school's sole nominee and best all-around student-athlete on their respective teams, represent every NCAA division and the NAIA. The group is the largest in the history of the award, eclipsing the previous record of 204 set in 2024. Collectively, the semifinalists boast a 3.64 average GPA and include 130 team captains, 24 All-Americans and 98 players who have already earned their undergraduate degrees.
Now in its 68th year, the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards Presented by Fidelity Investments have recognized 954 individuals, with this year's scholarships pushing the program's all-time distribution above $13.5 million. The awards were the first initiative in history to grant postgraduate scholarships based on a player's academic, athletic and leadership accomplishments.
The 2026 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class Presented by Fidelity Investments will be honored during the 68th NFF Annual Awards Dinner Presented by Las Vegas on Dec. 8 at the Bellagio Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
