Arroyave's ascension, McGinnis' moment highlight sixth straight win

HOUSTON – On Thursday, UTSA Volleyball opened its three-day stay at the 2026 Flo Hyman Classic. The ‘Runners clashed with HCU from Sharp Gym in Houston, Texas. In a four-set affair, the visitors prevailed, taking their sixth straight contest and improving to 7-2 on the campaign. With the loss, the hosting Huskies fell to 2-8 overall.

Set-by-set: UTSA wins 3-1 (25-23, 25-17, 23-25, 25-17)

FIRST SET

Two Makinsey Jones kills and a Megan Hawkins ace kept UTSA in a 6-6 stalemate early on before a 4-1 burst that saw three different Roadrunners land a kill pushed them ahead 11-9. Hawkins’ second perfect serve of the night came just before HCU responded with its own 4-1 run, heading into the media timeout up one. Sydney Bryant and Isabella Arroyave each landed two kills to pull back in front 21-20, forcing a stoppage from the hosts. Following two more miscues from the Huskies, Arroyave and Caroline Tredwell closed the frame with two straight kills at 25-23.  

SECOND SET

After splitting the first 10 rallies, three different ‘Runners notched a kill as part of an 8-2 run, including a well-placed dump from Valeria Ortiz. Arroyave and Bryant stayed hot, combining for eight terminations in the frame, highlighting a 6-1 push that set up match point. The latter racked up her side’s final three kills, including the set-capping blow at 25-17 for UTSA’s 15th straight stanza victory.

THIRD SET

An early 4-0 UTSA run failed to create separation as the two sides remained deadlocked at seven all. Four subsequent Roadrunners posted attack errors as Carol Price-Torok called for time down 17-11. In a blink, the visitors drew back within two before Arroyave’s fourth kill of the set made it 21-20. Tredwell kept her side in the fight, but UTSA’s set-winning streak of 15 came to an end by a 25-23 final margin.

FOURTH SET

Valeria Ortiz dialed up Sydney Bryant for the Roadrunners’ first three kills of the frame before starting libero Giada Obregon stepped back to the service line. The sophomore came up with three aces in a four-rally span while Ally Tribe’s two milestone-clinching kills supplemented the six-point UTSA swing. Two more HCU miscues then preceded a kill and an ace from Tredwell that swelled the margin to 16-9. While Arroyave and Bryant took turns finding the floor, the visitors’ edge hovered at seven. True freshman Logan McGinnis then made her first career appearance, posting a raucous kill courtesy of Ortiz before Tredwell sent a knuckleball serve to the floor that clinched the match at 25-17.

NUMBERS OF NOTE

  • UTSA improved its winning streak to six straight matches for the first time since 2023 (seven).
  • The ‘Runners lost the third set on Thursday, dropping their first frame since Sept. 3 against UIW.
  • The streak stopped at 15 straight sets, marking the program’s longest such run since 2011 (36 sets).
  • For the first time in five matches, UTSA hit below .300 as a unit, mashing .273 in the win.
  • Isabella Arroyave posted her first career double-double with 15 kills and 15 digs, hitting .448 along the way.
  • The junior entered the match with career highs of 10 kills and 10 digs, shattering her personal bests in both metrics.
  • Arroyave also paced her side in digs (15) for the first time this year.
  • Starting libero Giada Obregon was the lone other visitor to reach double digits in the category, nabbing 12.
  • Obregon logged a new career high with four aces, besting a mark of three she had previously set six times.
  • With her fifth kill in the fourth set, Ally Tribe recorded the 500th of her three-year career.
  • The junior leads all Roadrunners in collegiate terminations, ahead of Ledisi Kpea (380) with the second-most.
  • Redshirt freshman Sydney Bryant led the way for the seventh time this campaign with 21 kills, matching her career high while hitting .340 in the process.
  • For the second time this season, Megan Hawkins paced her team in assists, notching 24 against the Huskies.
  • Middle blocker Caroline Tredwell was the third and final Roadrunner in double-digit kills territory, posting 10 to go with three digs, two aces, one block and an assist.
  • The ‘Runners amassed just two blocks against HCU, coming in well under their previous season low of five (versus East Texas A&M).
  • The Roadrunners matched their 2026 high with 14 service errors, improving to 2-0 in such contests (versus SIU Edwardsville).
  • Logan McGinnis tallied the penultimate point for UTSA in the win, notching a kill on her first collegiate swing.
  • The San Antonio native made her Division I debut on Thursday after spending the spring and summer recovering from injury.
