Roadrunners battle to historic draw at No. 6 TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas – The UTSA soccer team (0-0-2) went on the road for the first time in the 2026 season into a hostile environment at sixth-ranked TCU (1-0-1) on Sunday, coming away from Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium with a historic 2-2 draw. Sunday’s final marks the first result against a ranked opponent in the regular season during a true road game in Roadrunner history.

The Horned Frogs won last year’s Big 12 regular season crown and reached the College Cup, and are picked to win the Big 12 in 2026, and gave the Roadrunners significant early work fending off first-half offensive pressure. TCU outshot UTSA 7-3 in the opening period, but UTSA quelled even more Horned Frog chances as TCU was heavy on possession but couldn’t get into range. Just shy of the half, Mackenzie Hilderman broke the deadlock in the 40th minute off Eres Freifeld’s free kick from the right edge of the field.

Trailing 1-0 out of the halftime break, UTSA dodged a quick volley of TCU shots, but made the most of a long Jasmine Kessler free kick beyond midfield, with redshirt junior defender Aaliyaiah Durden drilling the equalizer past Olivia Geller in the 54th minute. Shifting momentum quickly, redshirt sophomore midfielder Leah Varela spotted up for a corner kick in the 57th minute, and redshirt sophomore forward Ava Jackson pushed the go-ahead goal past Geller from just outside the six-yard box – taking the header from senior Addi O’Kelley in for the 2-1 lead over the Horned Frogs.

The Roadrunners were able to hold the line for an additional 28 minutes, but the Horned Frogs knotted things up in the 82nd minute of Kamdyn Fuller’s score via corner kick, bringing the scoreboard to the final result at 2-2.

This marks the second draw against a top 6 team in the past five games for the Roadrunners’ program, dating back to last year’s American Championships, advancing on penalty kicks past No. 3 Memphis in the tournament semifinal en route to winning the 2025 American Championship. The result also snaps a 9-0 loss streak in the series with TCU.

Goals
UTSA: Aaliyaiah Durden (54’), Ava Jackson (57’)
TCU: Mackenzie Hilderman (20’), Kamdyn Fuller (82’)

Quoting Coach Derek Pittman
“Coming into Fort Worth and earning a 2-2 draw against the No. 6 team in the country says a lot about the toughness and character of this team. We went into halftime down 1-0, made some necessary adjustments and our players never wavered. We showed tremendous resilience, pressed them well, and continued to compete against one of the best teams in the country. I’m incredibly proud of our mentality and the belief our team showed tonight.”

UP NEXT: UTSA is back at home in the friendly confines of the Park West Athletics Complex two times next week, hosting the 2025 rematch with Colorado College in the Welcome Back Birdcage game on Thursday, Aug. 20, followed on Sunday, Aug. 23 with cross-town action against St. Mary’s for Salute to First Responders.
