SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA men’s basketball team announced on Monday that transfer guard Demari Williams will round out the 2026-27 Roadrunners roster as the final summer addition joining UTSA ahead of the third season under head coach Austin Claunch. Williams joins a class of eight other NCAA Division I transfers, one junior college transfer, two high school recruits and a pair of new walk-on players, alongside returning sophomore Dorian Hayes.
“We are excited to welcome Demari to the Roadrunner family,” Claunch said. “He is a physical guard who competes at a high level every time he steps on the court and is a high-character young man who has a wealth of Division I basketball experience. We are thrilled to be able to keep him in Texas and excited to see the impact he has on this team.”
Originally from the Houston Metro in Fulshear, Texas and coming to San Antonio at 6-foot-6 and 220 pounds, Williams played his last two seasons at Houston Christian and has played in 67 career games. He made 29 appearances with 15 starts last year for the Huskies, averaging 9.7 points on 46.9 percent field goal shooting and 79.4 percent shooting at the free throw line – including a 19-point performance at then-undefeated No. 3 Iowa State, shooting 7-for-13 from the field, grabbing five rebounds with two steals against the Cyclones. He also averaged 3.2 rebounds and 0.9 assists per outing on the season. In Southland Conference games, he started 15-of-20 and led the team in scoring with 11.7 ppg, 46.2 percent field goal shooting, 33.3 percent three-point shooting, 82.8 percent free throw shooting and added 3.8 rpg. In 2024-25, he played 19 games for HCU before he was sidelined by injury.
The prior two seasons, Williams was at Oral Roberts, receiving a medical redshirt in 2023-24 after playing 19 games during his first playing season and helping the Golden Eagles to a 30-4 record, both Summit League titles and an NCAA appearance against Duke. He started his collegiate career at Arizona State in 2021-22.
Williams wrapped his high school career averaging 13 points and six rebounds as a senior at Dream City Christian in Glendale, Arizona, following three years at Fulshear High School, where he was ranked No. 16 player in Texas as the first player to score 1,000 career points for the Chargers. Following his junior year, he received Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) TABC All-Region and 4A All-State honors after putting up averages of 21 points, six rebounds and three assists to earn District 25-4A MVP honors – leading the Chargers to a playoff victory in the school’s second postseason appearance in program history. He was a two-time all-district and two-time all-region performer at Fulshear and played club for Houston Hoops EYBL and Super Stars Elite. His father was the Sooner Athletic Conference Player of the Year and an All-American at Southern Nazarene University before going on to play professionally.
