Sixth inning comeback propels ‘Runners past Lady Panthers, 6-4

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team picked up a 6-4 victory over Prairie View A&M on Tuesday in nonconference action at Roadrunner Field.

The Roadrunners (19-15, 7-2 American) bested the Lady Panthers (17-12, 9-0 SWAC), as sophomore Kaylie Olivarez (1-0) picked up the win in relief, while Kayla Adams (10-5) got the loss and redshirt junior Madison Collins (1) secured the save.

Also appearing in the circle, sophomore Reagan Stoudt took a no-hitter into the fourth, fanning two over 4.0 innings without allowing an earned run, while junior Meredith Schmitt tossed a scoreless frame.

At the plate, redshirt sophomore Makayla Madrid was 3-for-3 with an RBI, as senior Madison Lenton and sophomore Sabrina Wick joined her in logging multiple hits. Along with Madrid and Lenton, freshman Brookelynn Meador and sophomore Skylar Rucker drove in runs.

PVAMU threatened in the top of the first, loading up the bases before Stoudt got out of the jam unscathed. In the home half, Madrid singled, Meador walked, and junior Samantha Mundine was plunked, putting ducks on the pond with two outs. From there, Lenton legged out an infield single, handing UTSA a 1-0 lead.

The ‘Runners pushed another across in the second, as senior Madison Hornback scored from second on a deeply hit ball by Madrid. The Lady Panthers then took advantage of UTSA miscues in the third, plating three to take a 3-2 advantage.

PVAMU got their first hit of the contest in the fourth, with an RBI double that followed a Roadrunner error, reflecting a 4-2 score line.

UTSA rallied in the bottom of the sixth, as Lenton singled, ahead of walks by senior Katia Reyes and junior Jaeden Burnham. A fielder's choice grounder then allowed Lenton to score, and a later Panther folly sent Reyes and Rucker home for a 5-4 lead. The ‘Runners weren’t done yet, as Meador blasted a double down the right field line, knocking in Wick and extending the advantage to two.

Collins entered with a runner on first and one out in the top of the seventh, and slammed the door shut, with a pair of lazy ground balls securing the 6-4 victory.

The Roadrunners will look to keep the momentum going as they visit Florida Atlantic for a three-game American Conference series spanning Friday through Sunday at the FAU Softball Stadium in Boca Raton.
