‘Runners fall to Mean Green, 6-4, in series finale

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team suffered a 6-4 defeat at the hands of North Texas in an American Conference series finale on Sunday at Roadrunner Field.

The Roadrunners (18-15, 7-2 American) bested the Mean Green (18-14, 8-1), as freshman Arlette Hernandez (11-5) was tagged with the loss after fanning five across a complete game, while Britney Lewenski (10-7) secured the win. At the plate, sophomore Skylar Rucker went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and newcomer Brookelynn Meador drove in two and was 2-for-3. Junior Samantha Mundine had the squad’s lone extra base hit with a double that turned into a little league home run thanks to a Mean Green error.

UNT got on the board in the top of the first, on an RBI single, and UTSA replied in the home half as Meador knocked in Wick for a 1-1 tie.

A double and a sac fly in the second allowed the Mean Green to get back in front, ahead of Mundine’s double and the subsequent miscue that allowed her to even things up. From there, senior Madison Hornback and classmate Caton Letbetter singled, before Rucker knocked in Hornback with a base knock off the center field wall.

A solo shot and a later three-run home run for UNT in the fourth allowed them to take a 6-3 advantage.

Looking to rally in the bottom of the seventh, Rucker singled and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. A groundout followed, and Madrid got one to fall in left center, putting runners on the corners. A deep sac fly by Meador plated Rucker to pull the ‘Runners within two, and junior Taryn Madlock walked to keep the rally going. The Mean Green, however, sealed the deal with a lineout to center that cemented the 6-4 win and a series victory for UNT.

The ‘Runners will look to bounce back as they face Prairie View A&M in a nonconference bout on Tuesday at 6 p.m. inside Roadrunner Field.
