SAN ANTONIO – The Roadrunners saw a lot of success on day two of the UTSA Invitational and held a send-off for seven seniors, as UTSA track & field wrapped competition for the opening outdoor competition on Saturday at the Park West Athletics Complex.
In a mid-day ceremony, the Roadrunners recognized outgoing seniors Victor Charo (Abilene, Texas), Lauralyn Clifford (Toronto, Ontario), Shadae Findley (Evergreen, Jamaica), Fatoumata Kabo (Carpenedolo, Italy), Daisy Monie (Mission, Texas), Itzel Rojo (Laredo, Texas) and Madelen Sveinungsen (Froland, Norway).
During the day-opening field events portion, junior Edlin Laur captured her second silver medal of the weekend, going 1.75m (5-9) to tie for second place in the high jump. On Friday, Laur was second in the long jump as well and finished seventh in the javelin and then 10th in the 100-meter hurdles on Saturday with a career-best 14.31 clocking.
Highlighting the afternoon running segment, junior Martín Kouyoumdjian not only topped his heat with a commanding finish in the 400-meter, but he came away with a new personal best and the event victory at 46.66 seconds in the timed final. Making his collegiate individual 400m debut, sophomore Gabe Tubbs earned the heat victory and came in ninth overall with a 48.91 clocking. On the women’s side of the event, senior Fatoumata Kabo was 10th overall and eighth among collegiate competition at 54.96.
In the late afternoon, senior Victor Charo came away with another big event victory for the Roadrunners, pacing the timed final by edging out a 1:52.95 in the fourth heat to also top the 800-meter field. Freshman Israel Cuellar led the third heat and finished sixth overall – fifth among collegiate performers. Also making his collegiate half-mile debut, rookie David Zuniga was 10th among collegiate performances at 1:56.55.
Making a solid outdoor debut, Cibolo freshman John Williams III registered a starting point of 14.79m (48-6.25) in the triple jump to secure fourth place.
On the throwing circuit, senior Daisy Monie landed a discus toss of 48.00m (157-6) to secure sixth place and jump her to third in UTSA’s all-time performances list for the event. On the men’s side, sophomore Waylon McKenzie added 2.48m to his standing career-best in the discus, moving up to 51.41m (168-8.00) for ninth place on Saturday. That mark made back-to-back days and events with at least a 2m addition to his PR, having reached 51.60m (169-3) in the hammer throw on Friday.
Coming down the stretch late in the sprints session, junior Ida Breigan finished 10th in the 200-meter with a 23.57 clocking. Earlier in the day in the 100m hurdles, freshman Mya Robinson was just a step shy of Laur, finishing 10th among collegiate athletes at 14.38.
Up next: UTSA will travel up I-35 to Texas State’s Charles Austin Classic next weekend in San Marcos, March 27-28.
