No. 16 seed UTSA falls to No. 1 seed UConn in First Round of NCAA Tournament

STORRS, Conn. –The No. 16 seed UTSA women’s basketball team was unable to overcome the No. 1 overall seed in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament, falling 90-52 at Gampel Pavilion.

The Roadrunners (18-16, 9-9 American) fell to the Huskies (35-0, 20-0 Big East), as senior Ereauna Hardaway, classmate Cheyenne Rowe, and sophomore Damara Allen all tied for the team lead with 11 points. Rowe flirted with a double-double, also snagging eight rebounds, and Hardaway dished out four assists.

In the effort, UTSA held UConn to its second-lowest three-point percentage of the season, with the Huskies shooting 21% from beyond the arc.

The Huskies struck first, scoring back-to-back buckets before Allen connected from the elbow to pull within two. UConn scored the next six for an 8-2 advantage. Sophomore Mia Hammonds hit a floater, ahead of five more for the Huskies that stretched their lead to nine. Hardaway got a bucket, and UConn finished the frame on a 6-0 run for a 19-6 edge entering the second.

Rowe opened the subsequent stanza with a make, prompting a 10-2 Huskie surge. UConn stayed hot, taking a 48-14 lead into the locker room.

The Huskies outscored the ‘Runners, 27-16 in the third, with Allen topping UTSA, posting six points off two triples.

UTSA won the final frame, 22-15, as Hardaway scored seven, and junior Idara Udo charted five.

With the loss, the Roadrunners conclude a historic season, which saw a 2026 American Women’s Basketball Tournament Championship, a third consecutive national postseason selection, and the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2009.
