UTSA falls to No. 9 Nebraska, 6-3

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team’s upset bid fell short on Saturday, as they fell to No. 9 Nebraska, 6-3, at Roadrunner Field as a part of the UTSA Invitational.

The Roadrunners (0-2) couldn’t overcome the Huskers (3-1) with Hannah Camezind (1-0) earning the win, while sophomore Reagan Stoudt (0-1) was pegged with the loss after twirling three strikeouts over 2.0 innings of action. Redshirt junior Jett Harrell and classmate Meredith Schmitt also appeared in the circle and found success, each throwing a scoreless frame.

Junior Taryn Madlock was 2-for-4 on the evening with an RBI, and classmate Samantha Mundine legged out a triple and was issued a pair of walks. Additionally, senior Madison Hornback and sophomore Skylar Rucker joined Madlock in posting RBIs.

Nebraska wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as they plated two runs in the first and one in the second.

UTSA replied in the bottom of the third, as Hornback was walked before making her way over to third with two outs. Madlock slugged a single through the left side, plating UTSA’s first run of the season. The Roadrunners threatened to add more, with Madlock advancing to second on a wild pitch, and Mundine working a walk. The Huskers, however, induced a groundout to keep their 3-1 advantage.

Two more runs came across for Nebraska in the fifth, and another in the sixth increased the lead to five.

The Roadrunners continued battling, as redshirt sophomore Makayla Madrid doubled to open the bottom of the sixth, before singles by senior Caton Letbetter and freshman Demiree Stafford juiced the bases with one out. A Husker miscue followed, scoring Madrid, and Rucker dropped a single into left, pushing Letbetter across. From there, Nebraska logged back-to-back strikeouts to strand the bases loaded and maintain a three-run edge.

Looking to rally in the seventh, Mundine smashed a leadoff triple, but was thrown out trying to swipe the plate on a wild pitch. The Huskers then found the final two outs, securing the 6-3 victory.

The ‘Runners will close out the UTSA Invitational on Sunday against No. 1 Texas at 3:05 p.m.
