About the UTSA Roadrunners
The Roadrunners haven’t been able to snap the losing skid just yet, but the past three games since facing North Texas in Denton have been tightly contested and the Roadrunners led in each outing. On Wednesday at American second-ranked South Florida, the Roadrunners fired off the hottest offensive performance of the season with 56.1 percent shooting from the field and 57.1 percent from three. The Roadrunners carried a 50-48 advantage into the half, but the Bulls found a spark in the second half to pull away with a 109-88 win. On the season, UTSA averages 69.1 ppg on 39.6 percent shooting, logging 11.9 fast break ppg. On the boards, UTSA collects 36.5 rpg, including an NCAA 70th-ranked 12.4 rpg on the offensive glass. The Roadrunners also rank 46th nationally with 4.5 bpg on the season.
Junior Brent Moss was on fire in Tampa and dropped the best individual UTSA performance of the year, ninth-best in the American, while logging a career-high 32 points on 10-for-16 shooting with 7-of-9 coming from the perimeter – in addition to six rebounds. Moss is third among UTSA scorers at 9.5 ppg and grabs a team-high 5.8 rpg in American games. Getting in his eighth 20+ game this season, grad Jamir Simpson scored 24 on 8-of-15 shooting in Tampa, leading the team with a 16.1 ppg average – the seventh-best average in the American. Second among scorers with 9.9 ppg, 2.7 apg, junior Austin Nunez has partnered with Simpson to lead UTSA in American games with a 12.8 ppg conference average. Sophomore Baboucarr Njie tops the team in rebounds at 5.4 rpg while ranking third in the American (24th nationally) with 2.1 bpg.
About the North Texas Mean Green
One of the toughest defensive units that UTSA faces every season, North Texas leads the conference in turnovers forced (10th NCAA) at 15.7, steals per game (ninth NCAA) at 9.7 and are second in blocks per game at 4.7, while holding opponents to an American-low 66.6 ppg and 41.7 percent shooting. The Mean Green are 12-11 in the first year under Daniyal Robinson and have dropped four straight – including Wednesday’s 86-83 double-overtime setback at Rice. The Mean Green are 2-6 on the road this season. North Texas sticks with a slow-tempo half-court offense, averaging 70.1 ppg on 42.9 percent shooting, averaging 34.1 rpg.
A sophomore guard who joined Robinson from Cleveland State, Je’Shawn Robinson has started every night and paces the Mean Green with an American fifth-best 17.3 ppg, shooting 37.7 percent and putting down a team-high 55 threes – also topping UNT with 45 steals. Coming over from UTEP, David Terrell Jr. is second in scoring at 13.2 ppg, but also dishes out 4.7 apg to rank third in the American. Another from Cleveland State, senior forward Dylan Arnett averages 8.0 ppg and leads on the boards with 5.8 rpg and a team-high 24 blocks.
Series History
UTSA saw its two-game road streak in Denton snapped on Jan. 21 as UNT got hot in the second part of the first half to build up a 22-point halftime lead. The Roadrunners cut the deficit down to 14 in the second half, but the Mean Green wrapped up the 81-62 win. The Roadrunners trail 14-23 in the series that dates back UTSA’s inaugural season in 1981-82. UTSA is 8-11 in the series at the Convocation Center, dropping the last three home meetings. UTSA’s last San Antonio win was Jan. 9, 2021, with the Roadrunners coming out on top, 77-69, after Jhivvan Jackson was 5-of-7 from three for a 31-point total with six rebounds.
Up Next
Next week, the Roadrunners head back out to take in back-to-back road games in North Carolina at East Carolina (Feb. 11) and Charlotte (Feb. 15).
