‘Runners tame nationally recognized Lady Lions

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team took down a Southeastern Louisiana squad that was receiving votes nationally in both the NFCA/GoRout Division I Coaches Poll and the D1Softball.com poll, 2-1, on Thursday at Roadrunner Field.

The Roadrunners (6-9) tamed the Lady Lions (13-4) as freshman Arlette Hernandez (5-2) picked up the win, which was UTSA’s first over a nationally recognized program since besting Texas State on April 15, 2025. Hernandez went the distance for the win, fanning three and scattering eight hits, while Hallie Burns (4-2) was pegged with the loss.

Sophomore Skylar Rucker was the hero at the plate, delivering a two-run RBI double that scored junior Taryn Madlock and senior Katia Reyes in the bottom of the fifth to gain a 2-1 edge following a Lady Lion run in the top of the frame.

The ‘Runners will be back in action on Friday, as they host day one of the 2026 Birds Up Bash, first facing North Dakota at 4:30 p.m., ahead of a matchup with New Mexico State at 7 p.m.
